The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar, which is said to be high and rising.
In the last 12 hours, over 30mm of rain has been recorded at Knighton – an amount that the EA says is significant in such a short space of time.
From 11:00 this morning (Thursday), it is expected that water will be ponded on low-lying land adjacent to the river throughout the river valley.
At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river will be close to the top of the riverbank. However, property flooding is not currently expected.
At Alverstone, the river will continue rising until approximately 14:00 this afternoon but at Sandown, levels will not peak until tomorrow morning (Friday).
Flooding of Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road in Sandown may occur from 20:00 tonight. Ditches around Fort Holiday Park will also struggle to drain.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the road at Avenue Road in Sandown is already flooded and has been closed by Island Roads.
Neap tides are expected over the next 2 days and the Eastern Yar will have little opportunity to drain to sea.
The Environment Agency is asking local homeowners to ensure products used to protect gardens and property from flooding are operating.

the bend outside the Council Houses.
