Firefighters from Freshwater are reminding Islanders to get their chimneys swept regularly after dealing with a chimney fire in the West Wight this evening (Sunday).
A retained crew from Freshwater Fire Station were mobilised to reports of a chimney fire at a property on The Crundles.
Thanks to the use of a stirrup pump and plenty of elbow grease, the fire was extinguished.
The incident is a timely reminder to remember to have your chimney swept regularly.
Most chimney fires are preventable. Regular inspection and cleaning of chimney flues will help prevent fires within your chimney. If they’re willing to pay for it sure.
My house is insured so I don’t care one bit
What an irresponsible attitude! People like you don’t give a dam for the welfare of the emergency services that put their lives at risk putting house fires out.
I hope you never live in a flat, because if a fire happened in your block, you would only be concerned about your insurance but not the lives of the other residents.
Ha, you’d care when the insurance company asks for proof that the chimney was swept regular.
Good thing I don’t have a chimney in my flat
Didn’t you say house originally?
You said your “House” is insured not flat!
Please don’t fry chips in your flat…
Must have been quite drunk.
I usually am.
Chip sandwich anyone?
You say your usually drunk, are the hard working tax payers paying for your drink problem??
It’s only a problem if you admit it’s one
Yes it is important to get chimneys swept regularly. The following is probably why a lot of folk don’t …
To have your chimney swept here is on average £40 – £60. This cost has increased year by year – goodness knows what it will be this year. Not bad for a 10 minute job from start to finish – no smoke test carried out for that, oh yes you have to fill out the paperwork yourself too. Chimney sweeping is not exactly labour intensive now!
Funny how my friend in the mainland pays £30 with smoke test and she doesn’t have to fill out the paperwork – captive audience here I guess ?!
Actually soot gives many chimney sweeps cancer. it is far more dangerous to have log or coal fires than many imagine.
