Coastguard teams were deployed to Blackgang this afternoon (Saturday) over fears a person may have fallen or jumped off a cliff edge.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked at 14:55 to reports of an individual standing on the edge of the cliff high above the chine in the South Wight.
A search was carried out in the immediate area before cliff technicians were lowered over the edge to check the overgrown and dangerous terrain below.
Despite spending several hours on scene and completing a thorough search, nothing further was found resulting in both teams being stood down by Solent Coastguard.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

We live in a very strange world now. Someone standing on top of a cliff turns into a major search. I must remember next time I do that, to phone the emergency services and tell them I have not jumped.
