An Isle of Wight farmer has been sentenced for driving without due care and attention following a collision between his tractor and a motorcycle in Alverstone last year.
It was on the evening of 20th August 2024 that a Yamaha R125 crashed into a trailer as it was being reversed out of a field entrance on Lower Road, as first reported by Island Echo.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and began immediate treatment of the injured biker, a local man in his 40s. He sustained a serious leg injury.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled to Alverstone and later airlifted the rider to Southampton General Hospital.
Now, 68-year-old Graeme Smythers, of Alverstone Road in Newchurch, has been charged with driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road/in a public place without due care and attention.
Smythers’ case was heard before North Hampshire Magistrates Court on Monday (17th March) where he was handed 6 penalty points on his licence, fined £200 and ordered to pay £110 costs with a £80 surcharge.
I wonder how many tractors etc are driving on
island roads that shouldn’t be!
Too many lawless persons driving around.
None. It’s perfectly legal.
How do you know that!,
many vehicles are not insured to be on the
road.
Should not have been reversing out onto a highway in any vehicle let alone one with a trailer.
Bet it didn’t have a legal number plate,
majority of vehicles drive around the island
pulling trailers with different registration plates
showing,
