Following an increase in demand for emergency care, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust has declared a Critical Incident at St Mary’s Hospital.
Delays in discharging people home or into social care settings – known as bedblovkers – means that St Mary’s Hospital has again reached capacity.
Over the past few days the Trust has been under significant pressure and, in order to maintain the safety of our services, we are now in the position of having to prioritise treatment for patients with life threatening conditions and injuries.
The Trust says it will continue to prioritise cancer treatment and urgent operations, as well as people who have already had long waits for their treatment – but may have to postpone some planned surgical activity. Patients will be contacted if this difficult decision is taken.
Juliet Pearce, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), has said:
“Everyone is working hard to keep our patients safe and we are connecting with our Island partners for additional support.
“In the meantime we are appealing to our local community to help us ensure that patients get home as soon as possible and to only come to our Emergency Department (ED) for life threatening conditions and injuries. The safety of our patients and our staff is always our top priority.”
Members of the public are being asked to help by:
- Collecting family and friends from hospital as soon as they are ready to be discharged, to free up beds for those who need them.
- Visit NHS 111 online or call NHS 111 for heath advice, or alternatively contact your local pharmacist or GP.
- Think about the most appropriate NHS service for your needs and to only call 999 in the event of a life-threatening illness or injury.
- Stay away from our hospitals if you have symptoms, or are a contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

And I imagine building 500 homes in ryde, 100 in Newport, etc, is going to improve the situation, about time the people who approve them realise that we can’t cope any longer, but in reality it’s the brown envelopes that are the decision makers rather than basic common sense.
I don’t blame the NHS staff, they have been used and abused for years
Stop sick pay cured…so many take the mickey…
What we need is thousands of new houses. We are on the eve of destruction.
The last 18+ months have put a strain on the NHS
The virus is in Endemic stages, so must be due to the vaccines
Oh behave and stop making such stupid comments. People like you spread lies. Do you have a medical degree? Do you work in Pharmaceuticals? The answer is no. If you did you wouldn’t post such untrue sh*te.
and you, sunshine, I take it, have verifiable and quantifiable evidence to state that the covid jabs aren’t causing all these unexpected problems in previously healthy people – because if you haven’t, then you also should behave and stop making stupid comments.
and by evidence, I don’t mean the simple word of someone else.
Oh dear one of the village idiots have spoken, so we must believe him or it.!
One village idiot to another both stupid
Oh really john grow up and please just continue looking at pictures in comics
And yet the Council has, in the last month, approved at least 250 more houses in Gunville alone. And we don’t build houses for Islanders – so our population grows faster than it should. Oh wait, It’s ok, we’ll just build more houses and cover more green fields in concrete. Thank goodness the councillors and developers live in the countryside and can afford private healthcare.
i think islanders have had enough of this council in more ways than one.
Grab grab grab , look after themselves sod the others
If people are no longer looked after in their own home by their GP…LIKE THEY USED TO BE then the hospital will be flooded by very sick people.
If you shut all the other hospitals on the Island and only then have one … then the hospital will be flooded by people.
If you keep building houses for more people, then the hospitals will be flooded by more sick people.
Simple.
Perhaps the hospital could announce when there is not a critical incident happening, then we do not have to read the same trite excuses trotted out by the hospital on a weekly basis.
We should build a new hospital for elderly folk only, and keep it all in-house.
That’s called a “care home”. The core problem is a lack of care homes and a rapidly growing elderly population.
Goverment owned and run..is what i believe is meant..cut out the middle man…or woman. Yes have always thought would be good or atleast better then present private ones.
The government has made a complete mess of are country and are NHS, why the all get rich it’s a disgrace . we need another hospital and people should be paid accordingly what happened to great Britain
The Tory Government.
your just jealous because you lack the ability to get rich
I do not lack any ability any body can achieve anything I make a honest living and live a honest life thank you have worked all my life money doesn’t solve everything and you can’t take it with you . some people have a good start in life from there rich parents I wonder if they appreciate it .And I am happy are you
Your just a sad person must be hard for you to have lots of money full stop
CARE HOMES? They have just demolished Polars and converted one along Clatterford road I believe into flats. ETC.
Elderly people could have been transferred to Frank James for rehab…but it’s been left to decay…what an absolute waste!
Elderly people who once were managing in their own home and cared for by their GP are now NOT being cared for anymore by the GP, they end up in Hospital and never regain their independence.
This is fact. Like it or not. We are all in the same situation here on this Island.
These ‘Bedblockers” are actually people with feelings and emotions who have probably paid into the system all their life and are now being let down by the UK.
Add to that the increasing ageist insults you see cropping up everywhere and you can see just what a mess the country is in.
I think if people actually took better care of themselves then there wouldn’t be a problem. People need to stop drinking too much, stop waving the I’m suffering with mental flag and the non-vaxers need a massive reality check. Be accountable for your own daft weaknesses or stupid beliefs and get on with it.
Right on…if it was private insurance based health care and it was cheaper if didnt smoke not over wieght..exercised etc maybe people would take care of own health..now its just someone elses problem to pay for..and before you start negative comment..The estimated annual NHS spend on obesity related diseases is £6.5 billion.
Prehaps give the nurses what they want 18% payrise on their avg £36k (royal college of nursing figures not mine)a year like the rest of england is getting? sure that will help bring it to its knees even quicker..
