The next episode of Isle of Wight: Jewel of the South is to air on Channel 5 tonight (Thursday) at 20:00.
This new television series celebrates the majestic natural beauty, colourful local residents and incredible history of the Isle of Wight. Told through the eyes of those that live on this stunning island and narrated by Alan Titchmarsh.
In this week’s episode, upmarket hotelier Howard Spooner is preparing for one of the busiest weeks of the summer in Yarmouth. Whilst at Briddlesford Farm, 4th generation farmer and Caulkhead Paul Griffin is battling the summer drought.
In Ryde, entertainer Derek Sandy is preparing for his ‘Love Monday’ entertainment night. This week sees the final of his Islandwide talent competition – with hot favourites including a Dickensian rapper and a singer called Bubbles.
Over in Bembridge, 74-year-old diver and former lifeboat coxswain Martin Woodward shows the cameras around the collection of items he’s retrieved from the rich waters of the Solent.
The last character to be featured in Episode 2 is Helen Butler, who is on a quest to save the 3,000 native red squirrels.

the island looks nice from the air it’s a pity they didn’t show you what it’s like in Sandown Shanklin and high streets not just the bit that was cleaned for the tv
I watched the last one and it doesn’t show you the real isle of wight. Where are all the closed shops, run down houses, drug addicts in church litten, smashed bus stops and the list can go on and on.
FALSE ADVERTISEMENT SHOULD BE ASHAMED TRICKING PEOPLE IN TO COMING HERE
Compared to the mainland, it’s a small peaceful haven. The mainland has become like a war zone. I had some relatives from up north come to visit. They come from a place that was once voted the safest and most picturesque place in the UK. Now, you can’t even use the cash point without getting mugged. He says their town is now a no go area.
i have lived on estates in london and liverpool where things are much worse so i count myself lucky to live on this beautiful island wher i grew up
Like you I spent many years on ‘really’ rough estates in Sheffield, Bradford, Lancaster and Bootle and have seen both the deprivation and violence that would shock and horrify most Islanders but, to be honest, it’s all relative. This programme has, up to now, failed to show that the Island is a collection of communities, many of who grew up together, went to the same schools and still live in the same areas which is something that most overners have never experienced. BUT, this programme is neatly skipping over anything negative which must be giving potential escapees from the big Isle the false idea that we are all about tourism and will welcome one and all when in fact we can’t support our existing population.
Why on earth did they pick the most boring people on the island to appear on this program.
About 20 minutes showing people picking up litter in Sandown, 20 minutes talking
to the boring crab family from Bembridge. In the end i lost the will to live.
Bet it will not be long till we have a boring farmer stroking his cows before slaughter
and Mr.Boring from the garlic farm.
The old boring people picking up litter in a 10ft x 10ft bit that got me what about all the crap up the road. or was that’s just a one off just to get on the tv
Not many true Islanders up to now!
Couldn’t find any true islanders who could string a coherent sentence together. Maybe they should have gone to Ventnor for a chat with the guy who eats out of bins, or Lake for a chat with the shouting nutter in the park, or any of the dozens of bus nutters. Would have made far more entertaining viewing but would have been slammed as exploitative.
Thank god for small mercies!
And boring Rob Ashton no doubt. Maybe should have got you on for a good moan to make everyone miserable.
Wow did you find this interesting, ????
The Garlic farm who have products made elsewhere ( definitely not on the iow ).
This is not showing the true state of the island, ….
The building of rabbit hutches, the road work’s from w fibre !
The slow process of the ryde pier , the total waste of space called the council….
Yep we sure are an exceptional island ( once upon a time)
…
Loads to moan about.!!!!!
But some lovely view’s ….
Me too! I left my partner to watch the rest
Enjoyed the last one so must remember to tune in for this one.
you must be the only one it was so boring didn’t show car’s on there roofs and the druggy boy racers plus all the rubbish dump on the side of the road
I must admit, the first programme appeared to sound just like a tourist information video, but I shall watch this next episode to see Helen Butler and her sterling work on behalf of “our” beautiful red squirrels.
You don’t own the squirrels.
The squirrels own us!
