Isleofwight.com has announced the installation of a new, upgraded high-definition webcam, offering live-streaming views of The Needles – one of the world’s most iconic and stunning landmarks. This state-of-the-art webcam provides an unparalleled virtual experience, allowing people from all over the globe to witness the natural beauty of The Needles in real-time. The Needles, with their distinctive chalk stacks rising dramatically from the sea, have long been a major attraction for visitors to the Isle of Wight. Back in May 2021, the first camera on the isleofwight.com network was launched, mounted to the top of The Needles Landmark Attraction’s chairlift. Sadly, during the winter of 2023/24, the camera became battered and after time, became unresponsive, meaning Islanders and visitors from around the world, were severed from this amazing view. Following several site visits and meetings with the management team at The Needles Landmark Attraction, proposals were finally signed off in early Spring of this year for a new location, near the chairlift, but on its own, standalone structure. The team hopes this will reduce vibrations to the camera, which became apparent whilst the chairlift was operational. Now, thanks to this innovative webcam installation, anyone with an internet connection can enjoy the breathtaking scenery and ever-changing weather patterns again from the comfort of their own home. The camera is now also on a broadband connection, meaning it will become more stable than it used to be, as before, it was reliant on a 4G mobile data network. Michael Dangerfield, Managing Director of isleofwight.com, expressed his enthusiasm about the project:
“This significant investment in technology demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the visibility of The Needles and the Isle of Wight as a whole. We extend our heartfelt thanks to The Needles Landmark Attraction for their invaluable support in making this installation possible. Their collaboration has been crucial in bringing this vision to life.” “This installation has been 6 months in planning with various meetings, plans drawn up and collaborations with local businesses. Perry Wheeler of Patch Computers in Freshwater was the lead installer of the camera, while Dickie Burt & James Metcalfe of JPR Home Innovations installed the structure custom made locally by Island Structural to withstand the 140mph winds that can occur at The Needles.”
The webcam installation is part of isleofwight.com’s ongoing efforts to enhance visitor engagement in the Isle of Wight. They now have over 10 webcams around the Island, with several more planned for the year ahead.

As such cameras are now cheap, we need hi definition cameras on every major road to catch speeding cars remotely . Film is not needed so running costs tiny, but the lives saved would be wonderful and the lack of stress for those involved in lesser accidents.
Fines would fund the costs involved.
the cameras may be cheap, but…
It’s not the camera…. the large amount of complex electronics will mean the cost of ‘spped trap cameras’ will not reduce. You don’t just plonk up a webcam and hope to catch speedes… It doesn’t work like that…
They couldn’t catch a cold, yet alone a speeding motorist.
The island is a joke when it comes to traffic law.
Walk or drive down Regent Street in Shanklin
Vehicles are parked on the pavement outside the takeaways
I think Plod & IW Council are frightened to do anything about it.
Also pay a visit to Sandown Pier, it’s a Free for all parking on
Double yellow lines outside the pier.
The Councils Gestapo Enforcement officers are more concerned
slapping a ticket on a motorist who goes a few minutes over their time
along the High Street.
Instead of more big brother, perhaps improving the standard of Islanders’ driving would have a wider impact?
Wake up. This article is about the he wider public viewing a beauty spot.
I think this is a great idea. Well done isleofwight.com team.
One would be more use in Newport around the bus station!
Not such nice views though!
The Needles is nicer scenery than Newport bus station. This is a fact. So why vote me down?
But isn’t it nice to have something provided simply for people to enjoy, rather than to witness crime we all know goes on. It is not as if any of the hooligans are ever convicted on the strength of camera evidence.
A fantastic addition to isleofwight.coms webcams. Its great that these cameras are placed at locations around the Island for people to view with absolutely no cost to the public. A great service! Thank you to the isleofwight.com team your work installing and maintaining these cameras are appreciated…
Much better than visiting the tacky, over priced and poorly run park nearby!
