Scottish and Southern Electricity Network engineers are working into the night this evening (Sunday) to fix a fault which has left the traffic lights on one of the busiest junctions on the Island powerless. A cable fault has caused the outage which first hit at around 20:00, with temporary lights installed at the junction of Medina Way and Dodnor Lane as a result. It is unclear how long it will take to fix the issue, but Island Roads has confirmed they will issue an update when they know more. Specialist engineers from SSEN have been on scene since around 21:00. An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“Delays are likely and please do take care if you have to use this junction.”
It is hoped that the repairs can be completed before the Monday morning rush-hour on what is the first day back to school after the May half term. UPDATE @ 07:15 – The permanent traffic lights at St Mary’s Junction have been switched back on, thanks to efforts by SSEN to report power supply. However, 2-way temporary traffic lights remain on Hunnyhill as carriageway reinstatement works continue.

The roundabout that was there previously would’ve continued to work even in a power outage.
As many of us pointed out at the that this ridiculous and unnecessary junction was first suggested.
The roundabout caused jams in all directions at all times of the day. I’ve only had to wait more than two minutes on a couple of occasions, both at the peak times.
No it didn’t once it was level and cleared of plants and tree and you could see traffic,it flowed well. For many these lights are badly designed with poor road markings and lanes, vehicles speed across both ways, there will be a death soon. Many actually avoid using and go through town.Try tell residents and people sat in ques along Forrest Road .
ye your wrong it has worked out so much better..copins is the bollocks junction always will be..
Island folk do not know how to use roundabouts. They just close their eyes and floor it. If you need evidence, go and see the utter shambles at Whiteley Bank now the amount of traffic has increased due to the Leeson Road closure.
Spot on. Caulkheads cannot cope with Roundabouts.
Mexican stand-off every time
children getting cancer is a good thing
It’s much better when old farts get it they had there life
I miss the roundabout. Bloody shame it’s gone, it worked so much better.
Island Roads? – like Hare and Hounds it could be months………… Or not! .
Just think, if only there was a roundabout there. You wouldn’t have needed the lights, oh wait…. everyone, when the junction was made saw this coming a mile off.
Quelle surprise. I recall mentioning this very issue when they decided to get rid of the roundabout, which worked just fine.
NO it did’nt…
Let’s blame everything and everyone apart from the electric board!!! Like south water I believe they upgraded their system for this location while being built, problems happen and let’s maybe just not pointlessly moan and maybe praise the workers giving up their Sunday evening to go to work? I think it was the council who wanted this junction improvements yet everyone else had to make changes.
This roundabout was not necessary as the problem was always at Coppins Bridge. The St Mary’s roundabout has become one of the most dangerous and frightening on the IOW, with numerous visitors doing ‘U’ turns despite signs being in place. Turning right coming from Cowes is not a pleasant experience with traffic coming from Coppins Bridge turning right at the time as well.
Roundabouts don’t need power.
No just common sense on how to use one that seems to be a problem with island trained drivers it would appear
The permanent traffic lights at St Mary’s Junction have been switched back on…. So just probably a trip switch, how much has call out cost IOW and tax payers??
Whoever designed the st.marys junction needs to be strung up, should have yellow box junctions with cameras to get those twats coming from Cowes that block the path of forest road traffic. I waited for 2 rotations of lights waiting for the Cowes traffic to shift this morning. Absolutely ridiculous.
The stupid B’stards who run the Isle of Wight
can’t even stop tw@ts parking on Double Yellow Lines outside
Sandown Pier or Stop vehicles parking on the pavement along
Regent Street in Shanklin outside the filthy takeaways.
The thick B’stards don’t know what a yellow box jct is?
