A motorcyclist has tragically died after crashing into the corner of a building on one of the main junctions in Ryde during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
Police have cordoned off every approach to the St John’s Road traffic lights – at the junction with Green Street – whilst investigations into the fatal incident get underway.
Debris from an orange Kawasaki has been left scattered across the pavement and road, which has been covered over by Police using a pop-up tent.
The motorcycle has crashed into the doors of the laundrette.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 01:15 with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service immediately tending to the casualty. He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport but later died from his injuries.
At this stage Police do not believe any other vehicles have been involved, or are suspected of being involved.
The Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) from the mainland has been called in to carry out a forensic examination of the scene.
The road has been placed under a hard road closure by Island Roads and is expected to remain closed until late morning, meaning diversions for motorists. All through traffic should divert via Queen’s Road, Union Street, Esplanade and East Hill Road.
Local roads remain open although there is limited access to the High Street.
UPDATE @ 08:23 – Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are now asking for anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the motorcyclist shortly before the crash to contact them.
They’d also like to hear from anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to get in touch.
Hampshire Constabulary has not yet confirmed the age of the motorcyclist or where they lived, but they are thought to be local.
Anyone with information should call Police on 101 quoting reference 44200432908.
UPDATE @ 09:08 – The motorcycle is now being recovered from the scene for further examination.
The road is expected to re-open at around 10:00-11:00, according to Police.
UPDATE @ 10:24 – St John’s Road, Green Street and High Street have now all re-opened following the conclusion of on-scene investigations.
The laundrette is open for business as usual today.
