The driver of a clapped out Vauxhall Corsa has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving – and all because they failed to wear their seatbelt.
Officers from the mainland-based Roads Policing Unit – who have already caught 1 suspected drug driver today – spotted the vehicle on Furlongs, Pan.
The decision was taken to pull the Corsa over as it was noted the driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
Further checks then revealed a defective tyre and a drugs wipe proved positive for the presence of cocaine.
A 37-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.

Anthony slap on the wrist on the way. Mental health issues.
Uber delivery bag in the back
Didn’t realise my tyre was faulty, and haven’t been arrested for driving under the influence eithe
What a div. If he had put his belt on the RPU possibly wouldn’t have pulled him over. So glad they did. Good job, well done.
One down, and hopefully many many more to follow. Just a pity the courts don’t come down harder on these dangerous and irresponsible idiots
They should automatically have their cars crushed as part of any sentence.
There’s many more scum like this on our roads…..shoot to kill, why should we pay to keep them..
Well, you tell the police who they are and I’m sure something will be done about it!
May be a really nice guy. Just has bad habits. But won’t be legally driving for long I suspect.
Great that we now have an RPU but why are they a “mainland-based Roads Policing Unit” why cannot we have one based on the island? The costs of them travelling back and forth to the island in itself must be astronomical!!
They don’t get charged, same as off duty police using public transport.
The driver of a clapped out Corsa does that make a difference then if you got a old car then your on drugs don’t think so you / bet your delete this
Here here, well said.
