A Ryde man is due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple driving offences, including failing to stop at the scene of a crash that left his passenger with a significant head injury.
Alfie Russell, 20, of George Street, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on 1st April, where he admitted failing to stop, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and driving without insurance.
All 3 charges relate to a road traffic collision on 22nd October last year.
The court heard that Russell was behind the wheel of a black Seat Arosa when he was involved in a collision with a blue Ford Focus at the junction of High Park Road and Arundel Road in Ryde, as first reported by Island Echo.
The impact forced the car onto its roof, causing injury to a female passenger in her 30s. The occupant of the Focus suffered minor injuries.
Despite the severity of the incident, Russell ran away from the scene down Great Preston Road, leaving his injured passenger behind. She was later taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Magistrates have adjourned the case for sentencing to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared, with all options to be considered.
Russell has been released on unconditional bail and is due to return to Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday 4th July.
Throw the book at him, so many people think it’s ok
to drive a vehicle without insurance.
We need to set an example so others do not think
it’s ok.
I would like to see more Police patrolling island roads
Extra revenue could be raised by charging islandwide
parking permit fees, this would pay for the extra police
needed to patrol our roads.
