The driver and passenger of a car are trapped as a result of a vehicle leaving the road at Whippingham – in exactly the same spot where 2 people tragically lost their lives earlier this month.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are on scene on the main East Cowes to Whippingham road tonight (Friday), where a single vehicle has come off the carriageway and come to rest backwards in a hedge.
The incident occurred shortly before 19:00.
The road is currently closed in both directions as emergency services tend to the injured. Motorists are being diverted via Alverstone Road although this is expect to cause significant delays heading in and out of East Cowes.
UPDATE @ 19:29 – Fire crews from Newport are working alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service to extricate the 2 occupants – understood to be a male and female.
Southern Vectis Route 4 and 5 buses are currently unable to serve East Cowes.
UPDATE @ 20:57 – 2 people – a man and a woman – have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time but they are not thought to be life threatening.
Island Echo understands the injured individuals were travelling to family in East Cowes for dinner due to the lack of water supply in Ryde.
The road is now under a hard road closure whilst Police await further information from the hospital.
UPDATE @ 22:35 – Whippingham Road has now reopened on both directions.
Southern Vectis buses are resuming.
As at 23.12, the road has NOT re opened in both directions, still closed towards East Cowes…
