UPDATED: DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER APSE HEATH MIDNIGHT CRASH

The driver of a Mini has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving following a crash in Apse Heath during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).

Emergency services were called to the roundabout at the junction with Ventnor Road, Newport Road and Alverstone Road at around 00:30 when a car crashed into the wall of a local corner shop.

Firefighters from Shanklin were mobilised to the scene for safety reasons. Thankfully, no persons were trapped.

Island Echo understands that the driver of the Mini was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was taken to Newport Police Station.

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.

UPDATE @ 16:28 – Callum Andrew Downer, 27, of Medeway in Sandown has been charged with drink driving, Police have confirmed.

He is to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday 9th April.
