Islanders are being invited to discover the fast‑paced, inclusive sport of wheelchair basketball at a special taster session taking place next month.
One of the south’s leading wheelchair basketball clubs, the Southern Sharks, will visit the Isle of Wight on Thursday 7th March to introduce the sport to local people. Thanks to Wightlink’s assisted travel support, the Chichester‑based National League team will be holding an open session at West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Freshwater, from 13:00-15:00.
The event aims to encourage more people, particularly wheelchair users, to give the sport a go. The Island’s own Gary Butler, already part of the GB Masters 60+ squad and a Help for Heroes Veterans team member, hopes the day will help grow interest locally.
Gary says:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the sport here on the Island. Wheelchair basketball is for all ages and abilities; you do not even have to be a wheelchair user to take part.”
Sports wheelchairs will be provided, and everyone is welcome to join in. West Wight Sports and Community Centre manager Clare Griffin encouraged potential players to simply “bring along enthusiasm and energy”. She added:
“If there is enough interest, our aim is to introduce competitive wheelchair basketball and work with IW Basketball to grow the sport here on the Island.”
The Southern Sharks are also looking forward to inspiring new players, saying they are delighted to offer Islanders the chance to try the sport in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
Sam Woodman, Wightlink partnerships marketing manager, says:
“Wightlink is proud to support new initiatives like this. Inclusive activities such as wheelchair basketball bring people together and our support for Gary Butler over the years has shown us what a rewarding and exciting sport it is.”
The session is free to attend, and people can call 01983 752168 to confirm they’re attending or simply turn up on the day.
Donations to support the running costs of registered charity West Wight Sports and Community Centre are welcomed. Families intending to bring children are asked to contact the centre in advance so staff can ensure suitable wheelchairs are available.
