Firefighters from Freshwater worked to extinguish a blaze that had been deliberately started in some woodland above Totland Pier earlier this afternoon (Sunday).
The incident occurred at around 15:30 in an area of woodland above the iconic pier.
The fire – which had been purposely started – was in a spot that had been set up as a regular meeting place with trees deliberately cut down and various rubbish and debris dumped there too.
Firefighters used portable knapsacks and beaters to extinguish the fire before it had chance to spread.
An area measuring approx 3m by 3m was damaged.
A spokesperson from Freshwater Fire Station has said:
“As always we are strongly advising against setting fires anywhere in open public spaces. Please help us protect our beautiful countryside”.
Expensive BBQ that one!
Over 5k spent on this… this feels like some theatrical to me, safe enough for a photographer and I can see by the image there doesn’t appear to be anything for at least 5m around the fire plus taking into account it’s too cold and damp to spread to anything that can light up…
Sad people who do this !
