A landslip has sent tonnes of earth crashing down onto the revetment between Sandown and Shanklin this afternoon (Sunday).
Shortly before 14:20, a small section of the cliff collapsed close to Shanklin Sailing Club, spilling debris across the footpath. This left a large section of the cliff face hanging precariously.
Just minutes later, the larger section fell – with members of the public watching from the revetment directly below. This resulted in even more debris crashing down.
The area of cliff near to Hope Road is prone to falls.
HM Coastguard have been made aware of the situation with Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and a Senior Coastal Operations Officer mobilised to the scene.
UPDATE @ 15:07 – A cordon has been established around the area amid fears that more of the cliff could fall away.
The revetment has been closed, as has the footpath at the top of the cliff.
This video shows the cliff moments before the fall and then the fall itself – in slow motion…
UPDATE @ 16:27 – The Isle of Wight Council Emergency Management team are now on scene and are liaising with the Coastguard.
The footpath at the top of the cliff is being closed to all pedestrians with heras fencing in the interests of safety.
The revetment at the base of the cliff has been partially opened for those walking to or from Shanklin.
An inspection of the cliff will take place tomorrow morning, Island Echo is told.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
