Weeks of heavy rainfall across the Isle of Wight has led to a number of landslips around the Island’s coastline, including significant movement at Luccombe and Atherfield.
As previously reported by Island Echo, there has been significant movement at Atherfield off Military Road over the Christmas period with more of the ‘back of the Wight’ coastline falling into the sea.
At Luccombe, the land has dropped as much as 18 inches in places hindering access to local properties and affecting the coastal path. It was reported to Island Echo last Wednesday (28th December) that there had been movement in the area, which sits between Shanklin and Ventnor.
The coastal path has now been closed by the Isle of Wight Council will diversions being put in place.
Meanwhile, the Sandown to Shanklin revetment was partially closed over the weekend when tonnes of earth came tumbling down from the cliffs above, breaking through the protection barriers.
It’s known that it can take several weeks for the water to make its way down through the cliffs, so it is entirely possible that further landslips will occur in January when this past week’s rain makes progress.
Early indications suggest freezing cold temperatures may return later this month too, which will further affect the coastline as water freezes and thaws, creating cracks.

What you wanna do is build a series of underground tunnels in the cliff face at strategic points. Cos apparently these tunnels strengthen the cliff face and prevent landslips.
