A beachgoer, who was enjoying a stroll along the beach at Yaverland when they fell and sustained a serious injury, had to be surrounded by a wall of sand to protect them from the incoming tide yesterday evening (Tuesday).
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service mobilised an ambulance crew and a rapid response paramedic to the popular seaside spot at just before 18:00. It followed reports that an elderly woman had fallen and sustained a suspected broken hip or pelvis.
Island Echo understands she had been pulled over by a friend’s dog. Due to the casualty’s location, the assistance of HM Coastguard was called upon with Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor tasked to provide assistance. Sandown Beach Lifeguards were also on scene, providing initial casualty care. It soon became clear that the person – who required stabilising before behind moved – was at risk from the incoming tide. A decision was made to build a makeshift dam from sand around the casualty, in a bid to hold back the water. Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was launched to provide safety cover.

I used to build dams out of sand when I was a child, soon washed away. I wish I knew their method.
I suspect that they used bigger buckets and spades than you were capable of using as a child 😉
Quite so Tony. Unless the ‘dam’ stretched hundreds of yards between two points where the tide could not gain egress it would be useless as the water would just flow around each or either end. Or was it a circle of reinforced sand with a moat? Hmmm. Not April the First, is it?
32000 dog walking injuries in 2020 according to a harvard survey.
That makes dog walking a very dangerous pass time, they should ban it!
Ita almost as dangerous as wearing jeans whilst driving.
Makes you think about all the other things people say should be banned.

Ps. Not seriously suggesting a ban
Well done everyone. I hope the lady soon recovers
