A cyclist has been involved in a collision with a car on a major road into Newport this morning (Wednesday).
Emergency services are currently at the scene tending to the casualty just outside Polars, near the junction with Fairmount Drive.
The incident has involved a Mercedes E-class and a red bicycle.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area as the road has been closed between the junction at Furlongs and Cross Lane.
UPDATE @10:00 – It’s been confirmed to Island Echo that the male cyclist’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Police are currently waiting for the arrival of an emergency ambulance, but a patient transport ambulance has stopped at the scene.
Southern Vectis Route 9 buses are diverting via Pan Estate.
UPDATE @ 10:45 – The cyclist, aged in his 50s, has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment to his leg and face.
The road is expected to re-open shortly.

I am surprised there are not more accidents like this, i ride a bike when convenient and it is frightening how many island drivers have absolutely no consideration for the safety of cyclists and even if you give the police video evidence of dangerous driving online they do not even bother to reply except for a stock computer message telling you if they don’t contact within 6 weeks they are not interested or take any action.
Because of this i try to cycle very early in the morning before the bulk of the idiots are about.
Unfortunately many cyclists don’t understand the rules of the road, they think the rules don’t apply to them…then of course we have far too many car drivers that also think the rules don’t apply to them either.
This will always be a common occurrence as the law is ridiculous.most of the cyclists don’t consider the Vehicle drivers at all but we are supposed to consider them, in most times their law breaking antics.
Well said, Derek. Spot on !
Oh god, that is awful!
I really hope the cyclist didnt scratch that beautiful car!
Maybe if cyclists got a job. Then they could afford a car and bring less misery to us motorists
were you born an idiot or do you just practice a lot?
Their perceived job, as they see it, IS to bring misery to the rest of us! whilst heaping on the sanctimony about saving the planet, being entitled to more, ie a promotion to God-like status, and all the while ignoring the rules of road use.
And as for the muppet that rode through a red light down Newport high street yesterday, (I nearly scored my 10 points for a direct hit) and all you could do was respond with hand gestures and obscenities?as you may understand I’m finding it difficult to understand this mob!
What a ridiculous and insensitive reply! Not all cyclist should be tarnished with the same brush. My husband comutes every day, it’s good fitsness and for mental health and for the environment, he’s a experienced rider. I don’t agree with cyclist that are not wearing helmets or aren’t fully competent to be riding on the road. You sit there and moan about ‘every cyclist’ causing YOU misery for cycling to work to be healthy and to avoid rising fuel cost! Such an ignorant thing to say! And for all the ppl moaning about cyclists, how unsympathetic towards this gentleman who’s gone to hospital with injuries. Let’s hope it wasn’t a friend or relative of yours!
Thankyou for proving my point.
Couldn’t reply sooner as I was working then cycling home lol. Oh it’s the bank holiday, better get my sports car out and enjoy that too!.
What a ridiculous comment!
1 less on the Road.:).
Ditch you expensive car and walk
Oh i do work.
Your irony is wasted on some people lol! I got it though…
Probably didn’t see the poor cyclist as they were on their mobile phone, a bit more consideration please for people trying to get about their daily life not using a gas guzzling car.
Yet again someone was not looking and actually seeing !
More cycle lanes needed keep roads for cars problem solved a system like whats in Holland is only way to prevent this, a lot of cyclists deliberately cycle in centre of road when they can safely move over but refuse to, I’m not anti cyclists but they don’t pay to use road like others do
No Road Tax, Insurance cover optional, No evidence of any knowledge of the Highway code & a plastic helmet on their head with No British Safety Kite Mark. Yes, cyclists are a liability on our roads.
Tax them to build the cycle lanes, as they taxed, and continue to tax the motorist, only thus far the pedalling plebs havnt contributed a penny for the roads they use and demand priority on.
Inequality?
You really haven’t got a clue how the road tax system works.
These “pedalling plebs” probably pay more to the roads than some drivists who think they own the road.
Mr Old School and Others ought to read the Highway code and also check your facts about tax of the roads. Everyone pays for the road maintenance even if they don’t drive. The tax you pay for the so called privilege of driving on the road, is an excise tax. Otherwise known as another stealth tax by the government besides that added to the cost of fuel. My point being cyclist and e- scooters pay their part towards the maintenance of roads. Yours who is a cyclist walker runner driver swimmer( when the roads are flooded etc)
some people who drive panic behind a cyclist, just wait and pass when safe to do so not on a corner .and cyclists should pull over if there is a cue of cars behind you we don’t have to be ignorant to each other
All bicycles should be banned. Lethal. Escooter use on the other hand should be encouraged. Far better.
The cyclist had no chance as the car pulled out of a side road and drove straight into him and knocked him clean off his bike. He was wearing a bright yellow jacket in order to be seen clearly by other vehicles. I object to people saying that cyclists don’t know the rules of the road. This man has been badly injured by the Mercedes driver. Drivers need to take a lot more time and think of others who are more vulnerable on the road rather than themselves getting somewhere quickly – leave earlier! There are far too many car accidents on the Island and this needs to stop now before people are killed.
Agree. Maybe they should read the new Highway Code and then understand the rules of the road instead of making such stupid comments.
I have been a cyclist for over 30 years, and covered many, many thousands of miles in that time on very busy roads, and I was always proud of keeping out of the way of faster traffic; I only wish that the current generation of mega-arrogant lycra loonies would behave in the same considerate way. THEY DO NOT OWN THE ROADS, OR THE RIGHT TO BLOCK THEM.
You have just got lucky. This cyclist did nothing wrong. I am fed up with arrogant attitudes of people. Where is your empathy as a fellow cyclist? This man was in his 50s so what do you mean by current generation? Back off with your I’m better than everyone else attitude.
More bad driving on the IW
Almost the worst in the country!!!
