A cyclist in her 60s has been taken to hospital after allegedly being pushed off the sea wall in Sandown in front of shocked holidaymakers, with 1 person arrested in connection with the incident.
It was at 15:10 that Police and paramedics responded to Culver Parade, where it is claimed the cyclist was forcibly pushed as she travelled along the pavement. Local lifeguards also responded from further along the beach.
The woman fell several feet and landed on the beach below, sustaining what is thought to be a leg injury.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was immediately scrambled to the scene, landing on the beach just metres in front of the casualty. Thankfully, her injuries were not as serious as first feared and she did not require the specialist expertise of the flying medics.
However, the woman has since been conveyed by land to St Mary’s Hospital by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says they are treating the incident as an assault.
A 38-year-old man from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in police custody at Newport Police Station at this time.

[…] CYCLIST INJURED AFTER BEING ‘PUSHED’ OFF SEA WALL IN SANDOWN – ARREST MADE […]
Hope the lady is ok,a horrible thing to happen. Plenty of room for cyclists and pedestrians and never had an issue either walking or cycling along there.
Why was she riding on the pavement? Bikes are for roads?
Very true, but cyclists are above the law.
If I had a pound everytime I drove along Sandown Esplanade,
Seaview Esplanade and Ryde Boating lake
which are all one way roads, the amount of cyclists who cycle
towards oncoming traffic is shocking.
“Cyclists are a law unto themselves”
But there are no excuses to assault anyone, the
authorities should Police Pavements etc
No one seems to understand basic rules in 2025 Britain.
NO! ‘SOME’ cyclists are a problem, just as ‘SOME’ drivers are a problem. Your simplistic statement just feeds into the ‘anti-cycling’ hysteria which feeds the kind of attitude that probably what led to this potentially fatal assault!
Drivers have lengthy training, a driving test, medical fitness requirements, registration numbers and insurance. Anyone and everyone can ride a bike. Pedestrians should be safe to go about their day without the fear of being shouted at or run down by anyone
Drivers kill over 400 pedestrians every year in the UK. Typically just 1 pedestrian is killed in collision with a cyclist. If you genuinely want pedestrians to feel safer then you are focussing in the wrong area, but I suspect your comment is the typical knuckle dragging petrolhead “its not us in our 2 ton cars routinely exceeding speed limits you should be going for, it’s those 10kg bicycles doing 12mph that should be removed from the road!”
I saw many cyclists cycling side by side
holding each others hands on the Military Road.
Why why why do they do this, it is dangerous
for themselves and for motorists.
God, you don’t half talk bollocks. You are so boring and apparently spend all your time driving around the island. Shall we get you a little uniform to help you huff and puff?
Wrong on this occasion. The Revetment is a shared space for cyclists and walkers.
Pedestrians (not walkers) are wondering along with their children’s, eating ice creams and taking in the views. Cyclists are invariably on a mission of some kind and definitely do not understand the concept of sharing. Regardless of the laws of the Revetment.
Bikes and pedestrians just don’t mix. At school (many years ago) we all did a cycling proficiency test. We never used footpaths or pedestrian areas and risked being shouted at if we did. Now it’s like the Wild West!
All cyclists just like motorists should have to take
cycle tests so they understand safety.
On the island there are so many WRONGS on
our roads and pavements.
IW Council need to impose rules.
Vehicles constantly park on pavements
Regent Street in Shanklin is a prime example of
pavement parking!
So then Einstein, at what age do you propose that this test should take place at? 16, 17? Then what about kids, are they not allowed to ride a bike because they will be unlicensed?
I think the cycling proficiency test was 10 or 12 so we were able to cycle to school. Little kids can’t really cause too much harm on the pavement with their parents watching them. Things change. The old CBT moped test was massively upgraded in recent years to create better bikers. I believe it worked.
And I am sure you extend your get well wishes to the lady involved?and where is your usual rant EIE at rubbish druggie behaviour?….if you dont want to park in Regent street use the car parks Shanklin have a couple of decent sized ones, and stop being a moaning pain in the harris…
No one should inflict harm on anyone,
Since the pandemic the world is a nastier
place.
People need to respect each other.
I seem to remember being a teenager cycling along the revetment with friends from Shanklin stink pot to Sandown pier and being stopped by the police, sternly being told to dismount and walk as we were not allowed to cycle along the revetment. Don’t know if anything has changed in the 15 years since, but perhaps this is an issue? Does not justify the persons actions!
How many times do you hear the sound of the bike bell to warn pedestrians cyclist coming? Along revetment never. Ignore red lights ignore one way streets. E bikes using roads travelling at 30 mph.Blocking main roads 2/3 abreast even though Highway code allows now . The lycra gang
No one polices the revetment.
I think the pavement is quite narrow there, not enough room for bikes and pedestrians, big signs saying keep away from the edge
