Newport Rowing Club is launching a crowdfunding campaign this week to raise funds to save their historic boathouse.
The boathouse has been standing on the River Medina since 1863 and is believed to be 1 of only 2 boathouses built above tidal waters in the UK. However, the effects of tides and high winds have weakened the building which now needs steel underpinning to keep it secure.
In addition to the steel underpinning, additional funds are required to repair the slipway which is rotting away.
The rowing club is now seeking £6,000 to complete the work. If 60% of the total can be raised then Sport England has pledged to chip in the remaining balance.
Newport Rowing Club Chairman, Julie Clarke, explains:
“Sport England are looking to see that community sport clubs like ours really get involved with their local communities. That is why they have chosen to support crowdfunding as a method of fundraising.
“We need to obtain donations from at least 50 people to activate their support. Donations can be as little as £5, and we really value every penny that people can spare”.
A number of fundraising events are being held this month which include a sponsored (virtual) row around the Island.
The club are looking for support from the community as they know that the boathouse is much loved by ramblers, photographers, artists and local people. The Crowdfunder page is at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/saving-our-boathouse
