Foggy conditions on the Solent are causing disruption to cross-Solent travel this morning (Thursday), with Red Funnel’s vehicle ferry service now completely suspended.
Red Funnel has confirmed that its East Cowes to Southampton service is suspended as a result of the reduced visibility, with a shuttle service in operation on its hi-speed Red Jet between West Cowes and Southampton.
Meanwhile, Hovertravel is advising of delays between Ryde and Southsea.
Wightlink’s Fishbourne-Portsmouth car ferry is operating with 10 minute delays, as well as a reduced timetable over the next few days due to a mechanical issue.
UPDATE @ 10:09 – Red Funnel’s services have now resumed but with delays of up to 2 hours.

What has happend to the power of radar or sonic engineering? If the FastCat is running why not the Ferry?
How soon we forget.
PLEASE SIR! SIR! SIR!!
Can we please have a nice 24/7 shuttle rail link through a tunnel to the North Island and back again, instead of this medieval way of crossing a small bit of water?
It’s the 21st century, not 1066!!!!
Feel free to move to the north island then if you feel so aggrieved.
That’s easier said than done, have you looked into the cost for an average person to move their life to the mainland?
For many their lives are trapped because of ferry costs.
Maybe have some perspective before such a stupid comment.
Typical brian dead Islander comment.
Oh! Alright then ‘Get a brain’ – sorry ‘Get a life’!
It’s a shame that your life chances will continue to significantly decline if I – and many other aggrieved colleagues at St. Mary’s – continue to depart this island for locations that are not strangled by an inefficient and overpriced transport system.
Have you purchased a funeral plan?
We purchased a funeral plan with Safe Hands. They are now in administration, and it appears we have lost every penny we had paid to them. Maybe people should think before posting cretinous comments !!!!
Stop moaning and F off back to the mainland, so what if you work for the NHS.
Plenty more, where you came from matey.
You need to shut up and keep your views to yourself, stuck up muppet.
I know that it’s almost unbelievable but the fog issue cancellations of it’s car ferry isn’t it’s fault. This is actually down to the Cowes Harbour Master not allowing vessels over a certain size and tonnage into the harbour when the visibility is reduced to a certain distance, not only the car ferry. However to a certain degree they may carry a little bit of responsibility as I believe this all came about after a car ferry ran aground a few years ago in foggy conditions and another collided with a yacht around the same period.
Well said-a little truth on hear at last.
But I can buy a car that not only drives itself it navigates all new hazards, why is technology not used on ferries and then would satisfy the harbour master and be safe. Don’t recall fog was a problem 20yrs ago ?
I was on this Ferry .with the 0800 leaving E,Cowes at 09.45. However it was NOT THE cAPTAIN, WHO KEPT US UPDATED but the Harbour Master who would not give permission to cast off . Once given the captain pulled away and made good progress.
