Members of Creekside WI enjoyed a hands-on cooking demonstration when Petra from the Footprint Trust visited to explain the benefits of using an air fryer, while also highlighting the support the Isle of Wight-based organisation offers to local households.
The session began with Petra demonstrating a simple savoury cheese recipe, which members were able to prepare quickly by mixing the ingredients in a single bowl before cooking them in the air fryer.
While the food was cooking, Petra spoke about the work of the Footprint Trust, which operates as a family information hub on the Isle of Wight. The organisation supports low-income families and provides advice aimed at reducing household carbon footprints, lowering energy bills and cutting down on food waste.
Members also heard about different forms of low-energy cooking, including the use of air fryers, microwaves and slow cookers. Petra explained that many concerns about air fryers are unnecessary, describing the appliance as essentially a small oven where hot air circulates freely around the food.
Safety advice was also shared, with users reminded to ensure the appliance is positioned away from walls and not placed beneath cupboards while in use.
The talk also touched on smart meters, with Petra outlining some of the benefits they can offer to households monitoring their energy usage.
The Footprint Trust also offers assistance to residents experiencing disputes with their energy provider. Anyone seeking support can attend a drop-in session at Newport Library on Mondays between 10:00 and 12:30.
The organisation can also be contacted by phone on 01983 822282, and home visits can be arranged where required.
The visit concluded with members sampling cinnamon swirls prepared during the demonstration.
