There is significant disruption for those travelling into Cowes as a result of a crash involving 2 cars at Vittlefields Cross – on the diversion route between Newport and Cowes.
Police have closed Forest Road in both directions between Whitehouse Road and Gunville Road, meaning significant diversions for motorists heading north – a diversion within a diversion.
Delayed drivers have been left wondering ‘Audi manage that’ with a black Audi A3 sustaining rear end damage, having been struck by a black Audi A5.
The A5 has veered across the carriageway and crashed into a bus stop.
3 ambulances and an operational commander from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on scene tending to those involved.
No serious injuries are thought to have been sustained.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised 1 wholetime appliance from Newport, in the interests of scene safety. Firefighters have since stood down.
The incident took place just before 19:35.
Southern Vectis has suspended its Route 1 buses until further notice, with Route 7 buses on diversion.
Access to Whitehouse Road is still possible from Betty Haunt Lane and from the west. Those heading into Cowes – unable to use Horsebridge Hill due to the one-way system – should travel via Carisbrooke, Middle Road and Betty Haunt Lane and across into Whitehouse Road.
UPDATE @ 21:25 – Southern Vectis says it’s Route 1 service will resume from 21:30, but via Elm Lane, Calbourne.
Recovery of the vehicles is underway so it is hoped Forest Road will reopen in due course.
UPDATE @ 21:52 – Forest Road has now reopened, allowing Route 1 buses to return to the normal diversion route.

Enough said, it’s an Audi driver
I thought bus’s could use Horsebridge hill both ways in any case and we’re not going along Forest road.
I hope the developers of the housing scheme which is causing all this mayhem are making a substatial financial contribution to mitigate all the problems they are causing everyone.
I hope all involved in this utter bollocks are happy what a complete load of wank this has been took me 1n5 hours friday to get to cowes ..that’s good for the eviroment pollution twats..
The Housing developers are milking the situation.
Standard procedure for Audi drivers. Seriously though, the only thing that needs suspension is the diversion and the unwanted roadworks for the unwanted estate that’s causing it.
If all the new building developments take
place that are planned, there will be years
of disruption for Islanders, looks like it’s only
going to get worse.
What moron at the Council thought this diversion was a good idea? The traffic heading to Cowes and Yarmouth combined was queued all the way back from Vittlefields crossroads to the traffic lights by St.Mary’s yesterday.
