A road traffic incident has forced the closure of a section of one of the major roads out of Carisbrooke this morning (Thursday).
The incident occurred at around 09:30 and has seen a Peugeot 206 career through a hedge and end up on its roof.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are at the scene alongside blue light colleagues from The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Island Echo understands that the driver has received immediate first aid at the scene for back and arm injuries.
Whitcombe Road is currently closed from its junctions with Froglands Lane and Sandy Lane.
Traffic heading along Whitcombe Road from Cedar Hill or Whitepit Lane is being turned around or diverted locally from the Carisbrooke Castle Viewpoint.
Southern Vectis Route 6 buses are currently unable to serve their usual route and are instead diverting via Highwood Lane and Blackwater.
It is unclear as to how the incident occurred.
UPDATE @ 11:20 – The casualty has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital and the road is now fully open once again.
UPDATE @ 13:35 – A 41-year-old woman from Freshwater has been arrested after a roadside drugs wipe showed that they had cannabis in their system at the time of the incident.

Nobody should defend drug taking or bad driving, when the “facts are known”, that is where the problem occurs, to many know all know nothing comments that automatically assume.
IT IS CLEARLY EVIDENT today 2 RTC are due to positive drug tests. This equates to potential killers who are idiots just like drunk drivers. A great deal of ‘ accidents ‘ are now due to drug drivers. The best driver on the planet could have an accident for a multiple number of reasons that are NOT due to being an idiot.
Your self made title ” Good driver ” is your opinion, that does not equate to being such, it is hopefully correct, you are however not immune from coming off the road through a non human fault and being labelled an idiot by others.

What an absolute scummer. What gives her the right to smoke dope and get behind a wheel potentially killing innocent kids? Hopefully the Courts will name and shame this lowlife numbskull.
Obviously people like Boy Racer think they are clever, but actually he has just highlighted how utterly thick he is, numpty idiot & highly dangerous, couldn’t care less what he does to him/herself but it’s the innocent people & animals that get caught up in their shortcomings.
Just saying this doesn’t have all the details and the few it does have are wrong but the cannabis found in her system was from the night before not that day and 2nd there was no arrest made as the driver plead guilty 3rd and finally there was no arm injures.
Shouldn’t use drugs full stop. They are illegal, contribute to crime, mental ill health and evidently road traffic accidents.
