Cowes Medina Bowling Club has successfully completed its 2025 competition finals despite unsettled weather, with members enduring challenging conditions over 2 days of play.
On Thursday (11th September), the Open Pairs Final began at 12:00. It proved a close encounter, with Phil and Pat needing 2 shots on the 18th end to force an extra end. However, Ian McKernan and Graham Thorne secured the decisive single shot to take the title 15-12.
The Men’s Plate Singles followed and went the full distance across 25 ends. Pat started strongly, leading 6-1 after 4 ends, but by the halfway point Mark Baker had levelled at 11-11. The contest remained tight, with Pat leading 20-19 going into the final end. Despite being behind throughout, Mark held his nerve to claim the 2 shots he required, winning 21-19 and taking the lead for the first time at the very end.
On Friday (12th September), the remaining finals were played in strong, gusty winds.
The Novice Singles saw Phil Smith claim a 21-17 victory over Pat Barsdell after recovering from 12-7 down. In the Men’s Singles, Bill Pike adjusted best to the conditions and secured a commanding 21-2 win against Steve Lewis.
The Ladies Plate Singles was contested between Cat Mason and Carol Wootton. After a level start at 4-4, Carol found consistent form and went on to win 21-7.
The Ladies Singles Final featured Netty Smallman against first-time finalist Danni Williams. Danni opened with a 5-0 lead but Netty responded strongly, pulling ahead 18-11 after 16 ends. Danni fought back, but Netty closed out the match 21-13 to take the title.
Thanks were given to all players, officials and volunteers who supported the running of the competitions. Robbie prepared the green across both days, while markers and umpires ensured smooth play. Trophies were presented to all finalists at the conclusion of play, with further awards due to be handed out at the club’s Presentation Evening on Friday (24th October) at 18:30.
Despite the blustery conditions, large numbers of club members turned out to show their support, helping make the finals a true club occasion.
