A pair of residents from Old Charlton House care home in Cowes were treated to a special birthday outing to Goddards Brewery in Arreton, where they enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at one of the Isle of Wight’s most well-known local ale producers.
Harry and Colin, who both celebrated their birthdays in the same month, first discovered their shared love of local beer during a summer visit to the Woodvale Pub in Gurnard, where they sampled a pint of Goddards’ Fuggle-de-dum. That experience sparked an interest in learning more about the brewery itself.
Their curiosity led to a tour at Goddards, arranged with the help of events and marketing team member Chani Jones, who was praised for her kindness and support in organising the visit.
Upon arrival, the pair were welcomed by Brewery Manager Bob Simpson, who delivered a detailed and engaging talk about the brewing process, the ingredients used, and the history of ale in Britain – including the surprising fact that much of it was originally brewed by women.
Following the talk, Harry and Colin were invited to sample a variety of Goddards ales, which they described as the highlight of their day.
Colin said:
“What a wonderful day we have had, I’d like to do this every day!”
Harry added:
“The beer has all been delicious, what a treat to try so many different sorts.”
Debbie Webb, Activities Coordinator at Old Charlton House, has said:
“I would like to thank Goddards and all their staff for making the gents’ day so amazing. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and I can’t praise them enough. I have never heard Colin and Harry laugh so much, it’s been a magical experience for them both.”
The care home expressed its gratitude to Goddards Brewery for creating a memorable and joyful outing for the 2 residents.
