Frustration is growing over when exactly the Wishing Well at Shooters Hill in Cowes will be fixed – and who is responsible for carrying out the repairs.
For several months the well has been cordoned off as a result of the glass top being damaged by vandalism and the circular seating falling into disrepair.
Island Roads has erected barriers around the structure to protect public safety and has covered the opening, placing sandbags on top. Although the PFI contractor has confirmed it has repaired the seating surrounding the brick well, it’s said that the well itself is not Island Roads’ responsibility.
Local businesses are now venting their anger at the situation, which has created an eyesore in the heart of Cowes at the busiest time of the year.
It’s unclear who exactly owns the well but it’s understood it used to be looked after by Cowes Carnival, but the organisation is no longer in existence. Cowes Town Council is now weighing up the options of taking ownership.
A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“After the well was vandalised earlier this year, we erected temporary barriers around it to keep users of the footway safe. We also repaired the bench around the well as we are responbile for this part of the structure.
“We understand that Cowes Town Council and others are considering undertaking work to make the well safe again and as soon as this is done, we will be able to remove the safety barriers”.

The price society is bound to pay by paying people to have children, so now, more and more unwanted, apart from the free rent and lazy lifestyle such brings the parent, they grow without love and guidance to be vile.
So give nothing to food banks etc as you will feed the very mouths which bites your hands
I wish them the best of luck solving this problem. I am sure all will be well soon.
C’mon Cowes Town Council get your hands in your pockets, you’re happy to splash the cash on yachties, jubilees & royal receptions, what about something for the whole of the town?
Be fair Ronson, the Council has given too much already to the people. They have given every pregnant single parent priority to gain a flat or house, they then give free rent and council tax, the Government then pays that alleged ‘single’ mother thousands a year to pay for food, heating, and then pays them even more as the costs of such rise.
The children of such grow up, seeing how easy money comes, never enough of course but wouldn’t be if 10k a week, so has no respect for anything or anybody, as never seen money earnt only perhaps growing and selling dope or drugs of harder varitey.
Thus the council by overpaying low life to breed adds to the misery of all working people.
Slash all aid & learn them respect
Since no-one has done it, I’ll wish for a new well.
