Children in Reception class at The Bay Primary School in Sandown have been sent home following a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the school community.
Headteacher Mr Miles has sent a letter to parents this lunchtime (Tuesday) confirming that a single case has been identified and as a result, all pupils in the Reception year bubble need to self-isolate. It’s unknown if the case involves a teacher or pupil.
Parents are being told to collect their children from 12:30, but all other year groups should continue to attend school as normal.
The Bay say they are working closely with Public Health England to monitor the situation and are issuing reassurance that for most people, coronavirus is a mild illness.
Last week Island Echo reported that cases had been identified at Binstead Primary, Cowes Enterprise College, Medina College and Island VI Form.

It’s about time they have to disclose whether its pupil or teacher. Can’t see a justifiable reason not to
Its for the same reason that Drs won’t tell others about a patients details
Don’t need name just is it teacher or pupil so nothing like Doctor/Patient confidentiality
Because it’s no ones business .
Why does anyone need to know?
If it was a pupil thought the information given to us said that this was not possible?
You don’t expect real facts do you. Come on the council will stomp all over this and say nothing as usual. Maybe someone at the school will be brave enough to say or a parent.
My kids’ school won’t even tell parents in other year groups that a year six kid had to isolate because of covid so my advice to you all is keep your distance, wear a mask because you just don’t know.
” . . . for most people, coronavirus is a mild illness.” ???
I wonder if the 94 Island residents who have so far died from this virus were reassured by that information.
I’m sure as hell that I’m not! Are you?
Covid19 is loving the schools
Didn’t here of it in pub’s and restaurants on the island.
How many schools have to get it before its seen as a problem.
Or will it come down to how many students and teachers pass it on and potentially kill vulnerable family members.. Interesting
Sure that would help the childrens education.
You say the teachers may pass it on! They could be in that vulnerable group too! Not just children’s families
Dear island echo, I think it’s Mr Mills. Not Mr Miles. Pretty basic spelling error there. Come on.
I worked in a school once upon a time and in my experience the children were the biggest spreaders of germs. They always had coughs, colds, sneezes, snotty noses or dirty hands and the staff caught more from the children than the other way round. Children are just as capable of wearing a mask as adults and if it had a Disney character or super hero on it they would probably want to wear one.
Also close communities in contact with each other all day, just like care homes.
