The Isle of Wight Council’s Green Garden Waste collection service is now open for new subscribers.
New green-fingered gardeners who want to sign up for the garden waste collection service for the 2023/24 subscription year can now do so.
The optional fortnightly scheme lets customers subscribe online for a 240-litre wheeled bin or 3 reusable hessian sacks to be picked up from the kerbside for a total cost of £96 per year, working out at £8 a month.
The council will accept garden waste such as grass cuttings, leaves, and sticks. Logs, rubble and soil are not accepted. The garden waste subscription also includes a free Christmas tree collection service in January.
Councillor Karen Lucioni, Cabinet lead for waste, has said:
“We welcome new people to join our service for 2023/24 and the closing date for new subscriptions to apply is 17th March — space available is limited, so please don’t delay, and sign up today.
“Let us come to you and we can make your gardening life easier by signing up for your garden waste collection this year. It will be picked up from your doorstep, and it takes the hassle out of driving to the tip. You also won’t have to put heavy and wet garden waste in your car boot.”
Strategic manager for environment, Natasha Dix, said:
“Our garden waste scheme is popular, and we are reminding our current customers to make sure they renew annual subscriptions to reserve their space for this year, and we look forward to welcoming new customers too.
“Our garden waste service is a ‘one-stop shop’ meaning you do not have to call for collection each time. To keep costs down you could also consider sharing your waste subscription with a neighbour – one of you just needs to sign up and you can split the cost.”

How to sign up
- You can sign up online now, all you need is an iow.gov.uk account with the council, if you do not have one already, you can sign up on the following link: www.iow.gov.uk/MyAccount/SignUp with a valid email address.
- Receiving the fortnightly service is easy. Just go to www.iow.gov.uk/gardenwastesubscriptions to fill in some details and click and pay and the service will come to you. To check your collection day visit www.iow.gov.uk/greengardenwaste.
- If you do not have an email address, call the contact centre on 01983 823777, with your credit or debit card ready.
- Apply before 17th March 2023.
New sign-ups here’s what you need to know
- If you are signing up for the first time, your bin/ sacks will be delivered within 14 days, with the annual service beginning on 1st April.
- The council’s garden waste subscription year runs from 1st April to 31st March each year, new collections will not start until 1st April, even if your new bin/sacks are delivered before this date.
- You can pay the total cost of £96 per year in one go or pay £8 per month on direct debit.
Reminder to current subscribers
- Customers on Direct Debit will automatically renew providing your bank details are up to date. You can check that here www.iow.gov.uk/gardenwastesubscriptions
- Existing subscribers whose contract period is due to end have been contacted or were emailed directly last month (January) about their current subscription, with details on how to renew their subscription for 2023 and beyond if they are not on automatic renewal.
- Please check your junk folder or contact us directly if you have not received this.If you are on automatic renewal and wish to not renew your garden waste subscription, contact the council by
- 17:00 on 6th March to remove your automatic renewal, please don’t cancel the direct debit directly with your bank.
The closing date for all subscriptions is 17th March 2023.
The most expensive on the south coast mainland is £55. why should anyone waste their money, just put it in yourhousehold bin and save yourselves a hundred pound a year.
The cost is excessive, however the alternative if you have a reasonable sized garden is regular trips to the recycling centre, which can be cumbersome and excessive not to mention a considerable amount of additional time and work, if you don’t have a car then impossible. As for putting it in your your household bin this is not practical and not at all moving with the times.
If you don’t produce a lot of garden waste, share the cost with a neighbour and both use the bin.
Agree. Giving Perera and her cronies even more money to waste is just encouraging them. This council does not represent value for money.
Leave it as mulch, it’s just another stealth tax.

Vehicles 365 days a year 24/7
Not many places charge people to park after 6pm 365 days a year
like IW Council do.
So we provide them with garden waste.
They compost it.
Sell it back to the public.
Use it around the Island flower beds.
AND WE PAY FOR IT.

“and it takes the hassle out of driving to the tip” It never used to be a hassle until you restricted access to the tip and made it one – no doubt with a view to pushing taxpayers into this sort of money making subscription scheme.
The Council have reduced the price of this service. They had to, so many people opted out because the Council were charging over £100 for this service. Onward Waste in Sandown were cheaper. I think the Council have undercut them now by £3.00.
