The Isle of Wight Council is cracking down on the misuse of blue badges.
Following training in the summer, the council’s parking service team has begun introducing enforcement action to address the misuse of disability blue badges for parking.
The parking team worked with a senior criminal investigator and civil enforcement officers from Portsmouth City Council who provided 1-to-1 on-street training. The training event was specifically designed to improve their knowledge and understanding of disabled badges and to tackle offenders who misuse them.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said this has resulted in a greater awareness of disabled badge abuse, which the authority is actively tackling.
Working with the Counter Fraud Team, the parking service has also created and introduced new procedures and processes.
Under the terms of a blue badge, it is a criminal offence if the holder or anyone else misuses the badge. Doing so could lead to a £1,000 fine and confiscation of the badge.
However, the first enforcement case has now been resolved and resulted in just a formal caution and warning.
Islanders should know that only the person the badge is issued to can use it and it cannot be given to anyone else.

Will they be clamping down on the over righteous blue badge holders that park their motability car in parent and child spaces because its more convenient for them? I hope so because if I parked in a disabled space I’d soon cop a backlash.
Depending on the location of the Parent and Child space they may well be entitled to. It varies, especially amongst Supermarkets.
I didn’t mention if the disabled spaces are full, more that if they find it convenient they park in spaces that are signed for use by parents with children. I have no issue if all the disabled bays are full, but when they decide that the parent and child spaces are a better option they occupy them and leave disabled bays empty, that’s wrong. I fully understand the rules for blue badge holders, I just don’t understand the arrogance of them sometimes that’s all.
Your ignorance is astonishing. If all disabled spaces are taken, it is perfectly legal for a blue badge holder to park in a parents with kids space. Just as it is legal for them to park on double yellow lines provided that they are not causing an obstruction. The council would do better to clamp down on people who park in disabled bays without displaying a blue badge. Delivery drivers in supermarkets are the worst for that.
it would be better if blue badges were only issued to those that actually cannot walk, rather than all the lame excuses that get one. You only need a parking space near a shop, if you cannot walk, no other reason.
look at these ridiculous and pathetic eligibility criteria…
you find it difficult or impossible to control your actions and lack awareness of the impact you could have on othersyou regularly have intense and overwhelming responses to situations causing temporary loss of behavioural controlyou frequently become extremely anxious or fearful of public/open spacesin other words, if you are a nuisance and a self entitled, world revolves around me, p rick, you can have a blue badge
Totally agree, we have one badge holder who parks for a week at a time in pay and display but can run 300 yards with rucksack and a large dog in tow
A bit harsh and no need for the invective, but I get your point and agree that the only reason a blue badge should be issued is for people with genuine serious mobility issues. The whole point of blue badges originally was to help people who couldn’t walk or had a serious impairment. These days they are issued for far too many stupid reasons, like mental health issues that don’t stop you from walking.
If it wasn’t for the delivery drivers there wouldn’t be much point going to the supermarket.
exactly Dennis – Paul’s comment about delivery drivers just about sums up the self entitled arrogance of the badge holders – they expect to step out of their cars and straight into the store, yet demand that able bodied workers are to haul all the stuff that these badge holders want to buy, a significant distance from the van to the store, to be put on the shelves by other able bodied people.
some people with blue badges need to remember – able bodied people are not here just to pander to you – be grateful that you are being assisted, as no other human being, has any obligation to help another and if we get too much grief, we will just leave you to fend for yoursevles.
Gee wizz, take that massive chip off your shoulder, it may help you to be a bit more tolerant.
why should free take the chip off his/her shoulder – I am also working every day, paying my way and what do i see – freeloaders, spongers and deadbeats getting handouts, because they claim to be disabled – they can fend for theirselves for all i care.
I don’t see any of them rushing to reduce the burden they place on able bodied people – so why should I help them
The abuse of Blue Badges is really widespread.
I hope it is not just more empty words from this council
about time – some of these people do not need those badges and are just blagging it.
My neighbor gets about 12k every few years for a car.
He then adds X amount out of his own pocket to upgrade to a new flash BMW.
Morally wrong imo.
Plenty of those having blue badges are no more ‘disabled’ than many working people.
Now the largest scam, thanks to NHS getting super funding for ‘mental health’ issues since covid, is the fake claimants for such.
Knowing it is easy to fake, and hard to dis-prove the estates are info network all know what to say and what not to say when claiming such.
The new ‘old’ backache, so I can’t work dodge.
And, since mental illness has lost it’s stigma, many are climbing aboard the genuine bandwagon and overloading it now.
No-one should need disability cars, with food home deliveries, and taxis equipped for disabled for doc and hospital visits is ALL that should be funded.
A massive costly con for ever increasing numbers now.
You’ve obviously never been truly disabled yet still needing to endeavour to be independent where a blue badge really helps stops the isolation. A blue badge has been an absolute lifeline for me with my MS and legs that don’t walk very far. Please think before making uneducated statements.
Totally agree with you Becky. Blue badges aren’t just given out, you have to go through a process to get one, mine is a godsend.
Same.i have ms and cant drive now but partner drives so use it with him .i cant walk well and need a walker.people have no idea how much extra effort it is too have too park away from an entrance as no holders or holders that csn walk fine take up disabled spots
Bb should only be for people with mobility issues.its way too easy and i see it abused daily. No one checks. In particular outside warehouse! No badges at all as i sit in car waiting i see it
Are council having a laugh,The parking team worked with a senior criminal investigator and civil enforcement officers from Portsmouth City Council who provided 1-to-1 on-street training. So where’s the training for blue badge holders -its clear on badge and paper work,so why did council need training. Fully agree misuse of badges need tackling, but council happy for them parking double yellows, blocking corners and access etc – yet go over top if not get their £1-80 in car park.
Not all disabilities are visible. I’ve a blue badge but you’d not know why to look at me. For the record I only ever use it when needed, but perhaps some people could get down off their high horses.
drivel – the original idea of a blue badge is because you cannot walk the distance to the shop- if you can walk, then you don’t need a parking space near the shop – selfish, entitled, world revolves around me, time wasters, that deprive people who actually cannot walk, a space near the shop entrance
Agreed, why do council car parks allow free parking and have disabled spaces – if can walk 1/4mile into town surely can get to ticket machine (oh no need now do on phone app sat in car). If you use a space only fair you pay like everyone else. If you get mobility PIP/DLA you get free road tax or a mobility car so already better off .
Blue badge holders can park for 3 hours on double yellows as long as they aren’t causing an obstruction.
Guess what would happen if they had to pay in Council car parks.
they should be made to pay like everyone else and no parking on double yellows- they cannot demand to be treated as equal to able bodied people, if they aren’t willing to pay the same rates and abide by the same rules.
The blue badge only gives you access to disabled parking bays. It does not allow you to park on double yellow lines or to park on the pavement. Go look it up on the government website. That you do not get a ticket is a curtsy and that they do not want to be seing giving a disabled person a ticket.
Double yellow likes are there to stop the roads getting blocked. Go to a country that does not have them and you’ll see how bad it can be even when they have a lot less cars on the road.
I know of one chap that lives with a parent that needs the badge. He uses it all the time as part of his gardening business. Parking where ever he likes.
That simply is not true, the gov website clearly states that you may park on yellow lines for up to 3 hours so long as there is not a ban on loading. The image on the easy read version clearly shows double yellow lines are included.
I have the bb booklet got with badge for btw cant walk far!!lol its true .just not close too a junction or corner
You haven’t got a clue what you are talking about, at least try to get your facts right before going on your rant regarding where a blue badge entitles you to park.
Then report him as that is illegal.
You won’t, of course, because that actually required more effort than ranting about it on a backwater news site.
This is a direct quote from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-blue-badge-scheme-rights-and-responsibilities-in-england/the-blue-badge-scheme-rights-and-responsibilities-in-england#where-can-i-park
“Blue Badge holders may park on single or double yellow lines for up to 3 hours, but in general not where there are restrictions on loading or unloading – indicated by yellow kerb dashes and / or signs on plates. You may wish to check whether a particular local council has chosen to exempt Blue Badge holders from this restriction.
Where local schemes apply, such as those that apply in parts of central London, you should check the rules for that area. You are not entitled to park on yellow lines in off-street car parks.”
But if you’re parking causes an accident or injury to a pedestrian then you are liable, yellow line’s are for good reason, not for ten blue badge holders to park for 3hrs.
So before you spread false information, I suggest reading the rules surrounding blue badges properly.
As a side note, if you are that bothered by someone using a blue badge illegally, then they need reporting to the relevant authority.
wrong..you can park on double yellows with a Blue Badge out of London,so long as there are no markings on the pavement.
lol – you are WRONG. I suggest YOU go look it up on the gov.uk website!!!
I love using my brother badge free parking and it really does work thanks government
Don’t worry about Blue Badges, concentrate on
BANNING PAVEMENT PARKING
I read on National News yesterday in Leigh in Greater Manchester
Vehicles who parked on pavements were vandalised.
IW Council need to STOP IDIOTS PARKING ON PAVEMENTS
3 Hotspots on the Island for parking on Pavements
Great Preston Road, Ryde
Regent Street, Shanklin
Queens Road, Shanklin
It seems Isle of Wight Council have no idea about Road Safety on the Island.
(Very worrying)
no, concentrate on blue badges – they are the worst offenders – self entitled, park anywhere they feel like, because they think that blue badge is some sort of holy grail
If you are blind or really are unable to walk a Blue Badge is really helpful.Go to any supermarket and you will find all the many disabled spaces are occupied, yet you rarely see nyone having problems inside. In my opinion 90% of recipients do not need one.Why are there never any checks to catch these fraudsters?
