A war of words has broken out between Isle of Wight-based DJ Chicane and global hitmaker Calvin Harris over claims that Harris’ latest single ‘Blessings’ is very similar to one of Chicane’s most iconic tracks from the 90s.
St Helens-based Nick Bracegirdle, more commonly known as Chicane, has accused Calvin Harris of copying elements from his 1996 trance classic Offshore in the newly released track Blessings.
The row began when fans pointed out similarities between the songs shortly after Blessings was released earlier this month. Chicane joined the conversation by commenting under Harris’ promotional Instagram video, writing: “I would like to thank Calvin Harris for making me current again”.
Last week, Chicane posted a video on social media directly comparing segments of the 2 tracks, announcing ‘copyright alert’.
In response, Calvin Harris has uploaded his own video claiming he has done nothing wrong and that the tracks are not the same.
Offshore was originally released on Chicane’s debut album Far From the Maddening Crowds, and remains a defining track in UK electronic music history.
Chicane is set to play on the Isle of Wight in September this year, when Chicane:Sunsets heads to Robin Hill.
