The historic heart of the Isle of Wight’s county town will get a pair of new 3-bedroom houses, replacing empty office space.
County Hall has granted Peter Groves of Niton Developments consent for a conversion of offices at 15 and 16 Quay Street in Newport.
The address was previously home to accountancy firm A.H. Cross and Co.
A statement submitted by Mr Groves’s agent, Macaire Associates, said:
“These are a pair of former town houses that have for many decades been used as offices.
“The conversion given their original use is easily achieved, as all the internal fabric still exists, minimal works are therefore required to effect the change.
“The site is located within the Historic Town Centre of Newport – as such it is in a very sustainable location, within walking distance of all facilities and amenities.
“There are a number of car parks within easy walking distance, all of which offer residents parking permits.”
A decision report from the council’s planners said:
“Nos. 15 and 16 were originally constructed as residential dwellings and reverting to this use would require minimal intervention and would not have an impact on the vitality of the town centre.
“There would be no impact on the character and appearance of the (Newport) conservation area.”
Three conditions were attached to comply with legislation and planning policy and for architectural protection in the interests of the Newport Conservation Area.
