UPDATED: COASTGUARD CALLED TO WINDSURFER IN DIFFICULTY AT SHANKLIN


Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team have been tasked to reports of a windsurfer in difficulty in Shanklin this afternoon (Friday).

Coastguard officers are on scene at the northern end of the Esplanade after being alerted to the situation by a member of the public.

The sea state is understood to be extremely rough with waves crashing against the shore. A yellow weather warning for strong rain is in force, with a wind warning coming into force later today.

UPDATE @ 16:04 – It is understood that the windsurfer is out of difficulty and has made it back to the shore.

Coastguard officers have given advice to the individual and are now standing down from the incident.

The incident has been declared a false alarm with good intent.

If you spot someone in difficulty on the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
