Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge, Ventnor and The Needles are working to rescue an individual who has become stuck on the cliffs at Culver this evening (Friday).
The incident is currently unfolding after the alarm was raised by the casualty sometime around 18:00.
Island Echo readers have reported hearing the multiple emergency teams responding to the area.
UPDATE @ 18:35 – The male casualty has been located and Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) are working on the best way of reaching and rescuing the individual, who is located between Culver Down and Yaverland.
CROs have also taken up position on the beach below.
UPDATE @ 18:48 – A cliff technician has been lowered over the cliff edge to retrieve the casualty, who is now safely back on firm ground. He was unable to self-rescue from his predicament.
Island Echo is told that the male, in his 40s, regularly walks from Yaverland, along the beach and up Limpett Run. However, today’s adventure resulted in around 25 Coastguard Officers from across 3 teams being sent to the local’s aid.
The rescued casualty is making his own way back to his car having been given advice by the Coastguard.
Islanders are being urged – once again – to avoid cliff edges, especially during this time of crisis. Such incidents not only put you in danger, but risk the health of the search and rescue teams too.
HM Coastguard are now standing down from the incident with crews returning to station to disinfect their equipment, ready for the next call out.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

Wait for it
Should have left the idiot there!!
And he’s compromised all those people who should be safe distancing. Hit him with hefty fine
What a idiot
What on earth was he doing there? Unnecessary waste of blue light resources
As if our emergency services haven’t got enough to worry about at the moment.
Typical silly response. As we only have twenty or so in our hospital with CV, exactly ‘what’ would these emergency crews be doing otherwise? Hardly going to be sat by the bed side mopping brows of these unfortunate CV patients are they.
Same ever time the fire brigade the Police etc are called to anything non CV, the usual cry goes up, that they have ‘enough’ to do as it is. The NHS do have more work, but as less people are being treated for other aliments than is usual, don’t lets assume CV is the ‘only game in town’.
People need to go out to stimulate their minds and bodies.
Otherwise some may be throwing themselves off Culver cliff, then you would be complaining about even those poor souls.
Get a grip, it didn’t need so many anyway to rescue one person. All ott imo
It’s not about how busy they are, it’s a worry as that rescue would have put both the rescuers and the man at risk of corona due to close contact. There are perfectly safe ways to go out and exercise without getting stuck on a cliff and needing the emergency services……
Sarah, I agree. One person went speeding past my house at midnight on a one wheel bicycle last night, with his arms outstretched doing some kind of balancing act, supposing he fell off that and hurt himself late at night with not many people about to know if he was knocked unconscious?
(Though there were plenty about last night for some reason, but still seems a bit risky to go out late at night riding a unicycle.)
Stay at home, I feel you need to get out more, or ease back on the smoking of funny things. A one wheeled cycle at midnight……indeed!
I believe the name for the thing is a unicycle , and as I’ve also seen skateboarders and an adult on what looks like a child’s scooter also go past at various times at night, it doesn’t seem to be anything unusual round here.
And no smoking of funny things from me, the smoking of funny things is one of the very annoying things I have to endure from my scummy neighbour but he’s probably too comatose to notice anything as the amount of the rubbish he smokes probably has totally addled any ability to notice anything unusual.
Which part of “Stay at home” didn’t you understand?
Really unbelievable some people
wtf all these people out risking their health for 1 idiot
#whatpartofstayatfuckinghomedontyouunderstand
What was he doing up there?
Another good use of our emergency services!
Lol should of left the muppet there
Looks like they were preparing to scale the North face eiger. Be honest guys was nice to try your kit out.
What an idiot……
I’ve seen people do stupid things around there as a short cut to get to or from the beach. If he does it regularly he’ll probably do it again.
Talk about an over the top response. Anyone would think that having that many rescuers that it was staged to reinforce the ‘stay at home’ message.
Seriously??!………..
If we had a proper lock down in place stupid bloody idiots wouldn’t be able to do this…. but yet again he gets told off and sent on his merry way…. he’s put all them emergency service at risk
If they are “emergency services”, arguably that’s what they’re there for. I’m not saying he’s not a numpty but lets get a grip on things here – emergency services are there for a reason and they’re trained for this. But he’s still a plank for getting in the clag…
A proper lock down ,,,, well said nige , people are treating this lock down as a bloody joke and taking very little if any notice at all.
There’s no policing this at all ,just hope it don’t come back and bite them on the ass
Well ott response as normal
Why is it SOME people think the stay at home rules don’t apply to to them!
Being allowed out to exercise? Agree it was a stupid place to exercise but we aren’t locked indoors 24/7
I am and it’s people that are treating the “stay at home” as a joke that will keep me here for longer than the estimated 12 weeks.
Because they dont, you are allowed to go out and exercise
He was taking the daily exercise that he is legally allowed to do and is fully in line with both government and medical advice.
The law and associated guidance do not say that you have to stay at home 24 hours a day unless you are in temporary isolation due to a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 of yourself or someone else in your household.
The guidelines do specify the circumstances where you are permitted to leave your home and the make it clear that you should minimise risk to yourself and others by social distancing.
Regular exercise outside and exposure to sunlight is important for our physical and mental health which is precisely why it is on the list of permitted reasons to leave your home.
By all means criticise the poor choices that led to this incident occurring and the consequences of it but please do not spread dangerous misinformation.
What about exercise on a one wheel bicycle after dark? I saw one of those go speeding along past my place last night after midnight, another person crossed the road in front of him, and another group of people appeared to be having an outdoor party in their garden which was all lit up with a lot of laughter coming from it by many voices.
Cycling is allowed, and perhaps at night the rider assumed less would be about, including nosey curtain twitchers.
Awww nothing better than sat on a fat arse eating watching TV. And everyone saying how great you are for doing it. Slobs have never been held in such esteem.
Hope you’re not referring to me, Steve-0. I am not fat, and do not have a TV. Please do not mix up conscientious people with wasters who sit at home watching TV all day whether there is a lockdown in place or not!
Lucky he didn’t fall off the edge and die of coronavirus
How many people need to write negative things? We don’t know what happened or why he was there. So can people try not to be horrible. People make mistakes. The article is about being sensible and staying home, it is yet another constant reminder about not putting undue pressure on the emergency services. But we don’t know why he was there… So can we’ve be kinder and less judgemental?
This social media space is more Franz Kafka, than Enid Blyton, I’m afraid Vicky.
Clearly the guy shouldn’t have put himself in a position where this could happen (that applied even before the pandemic).
Having said that I’m having a hard time understanding why it took three teams and 25 people to rescue him.
This is not a criticism – there are clearly procedures that have to be followed to ensure the safety of the rescuers. It is just my ignorance about how these things work which I’m hoping someone can clear up.
Also, the pixellation of the guy’s face seems a bit minimal as it is still clearly recognisable in the photo.
To the people who can’t understand why it takes so many, safety. The numbers are required to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control. If you still do not understand, then you are a danger to yourselves and others and should stay in.
