To celebrate the return of birds like dark-bellied brent geese, shoveler and sanderling, a project has been created by local bird conservation group, Bird Aware Solent.
The project aims to connect people to our fantastic coastline by becoming a ‘scientist’ for an hour and recording the number, species and location of the birds.
The Solent is currently alive with winter wading birds, ducks and geese.
It’s the launch year of the ‘Great Solent Birdwatch’ that runs from 30th November to 8th December and lots of useful resources have been created to help participants get involved. Download them here – www.birdaware.org.
Councillor Seán Woodward, Chairman of the Partnership for South Hampshire (PfSH), which oversees Bird Aware commented:
“This citizen science initiative is a perfect way for local people and families to enjoy the remarkable winter birds we welcome every year on the Solent. The coast can get overlooked during winter, but for bird life, there is no better time to visit”.
You don’t have to be the next Charles Darwin or Gilbert White to take part! Everyone is encouraged to sign up and get involved and there is also a photography competition for all those eager to snap the amazing birds. Send your entries to [email protected].
