CASH-STRAPPED COUNCIL INCREASE CAR PARKING CHARGES AGAIN – JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER

SHOPPERS AND COPPERS STRUGGLE TO PARK FOLLOWING CHANGE TO COUNTY HALL PARKING
Share on FacebookShare on X

Car parking charges on the Isle of Wight are set to rise once again, with motorists being targeted as cash cows.

In most instances, fees will rise 25p an hour, for short and long-stay car parks and on-street parking places.

Parking charges also increased last year and have become a sure-fire way for the cash-strapped Isle of Wight Council to ‘generate income’. The rises will come into force at the start of July.

Article continues below this advertisement

It is thought the 25p an-hour increase in tariffs will net the authority £195,000 this year. The tariffs in short-stay car parks will rise by up to 75p, with a 2 to 3-hour stay now costing £6.15.

In long-stay car parks, tariffs will increase by up to £2.50, making a 6 -10 hour say in the majority of them £12.50. The £1 overnight parking fee was reduced in recent years to just the winter months, increasing the charge to £2 in the summer.

In the latest move, the authority is now scrapping the winter £1 fee, making it a £2 fee all-year round. It is hoped the overnight charges will generate £36,600.

The All-Island Car Park permit, frequently used by commuters, is increasing by 20% — an extra £10 a month if you were to pay a singular payment, totalling £60 a month.

Previously the permit used to cost £324 or £462, for different variations of the permit, which have since been combined into 1.

Article continues below this advertisement

The charge would increase from £540 to £648 if you hold a 12-month permit. For those who previously had the cheaper permit, costs have now doubled since the end of 2020.

The All-Island Car Park permit changes would make the authority £60,000.

The charge to park on Newport High Street, and other short-stay on-street parking areas in the town and in Cowes, will now cost between £1.20 and £4.70 to stay from 30 minutes to up to 2 hours.

Long-stay on-street parking areas in Cowes, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Yarmouth will see tariffs rise by up to £2 with the charge to park for between 6 and 8 hours now costing £11.40.

Tourist permits are also on the rise, making an additional £11,000.

All the charges were approved in the Isle of Wight Council’s budget-setting process earlier this year.

Well well our cash strapped council strike again!!!!!
Raising an extra income of £242,600 in total ,,,,,
Now can I ask after you have taken your percentage out for the pension pot, what are you going to waste the rest of our money on ??????
Not satisfied with turning the island into a concrete jungle ,there won’t be any shops in towns, because no one will pay these rip off prices to park ,we the cash cow’s are fed up paying more for less …..

The money is wasted on the spongers claiming that they or one of their multitude has a ‘hidden’ disability so ‘they’ don’t have to pay for parking, BUT claim thousands of pounds extra each year ‘because’ of this ‘alleged’ disability.

Mental health issues amongst the lower classes is the ‘new’ back ache claim, for the DHSS sussed that one by tests etc, yet the mental health anxiety is easy to fake.

You need to know more low life people to really ‘understand’ what is going on.

Yes that right, the council should make the free loaders pay council tax for their free houses, many of whom are claiming more in free hand outs of some kind than a workman’s wages that he comes home with. That would bring a good few thousand in revenue for them, there are thousands of them claiming free housing

Except that money comes from the government right, not from local council who have made the decision to do this….. Place your blame with the people who make these decisions that are better off, not the vulnerable people who are worse off…

It would be helpful to list that as percentages for all measures. Because we have another year with 10% inflation that’s not slowing down – so the real rise is only anything above 10% only to be honest. Otherwise £110 is worth same as £100 last year. Cash is just super weak.

Making parking less affordable just makes people less likely to go wherever there are parking charges. IWC killing off our highstreets instead of engaging with businesses to help them remain sustainable. Way to go!

Dead right. I have left the island and live where most parking is ether free, or at a much lower cost on the IOW. That’s why people here stay longer and maybe spend more. The IOW council never understand that putting prices up and these prices are now recklessly high, actually does not generate a like for like increase in revenue, but simply stops more people from parking.

I live in a cul de sac with residential parking, we are getting rubbish clearance vans and others leaving their vehicles here all the time, this is just the start.

I guess the likes of Amazon will be the only ones making money, the cash strapped island high street shops will disappear at an even faster rate which in turn will be less shoppers and a decline in parking and therefore a reduction in income for the Council. What a bunch of idiots we have, don’t the Council think we are cash strapped as well.

Really!! Perhaps if half of the overpaid council workers took a small pay cut they would not be so cash strapped!! It’s not like they are value for money.

Just park on the DOUBLE YELLOW LINES

Or on the DOUBLE YELLOW LINES outside Napoleons Reach

Or also taxis, trains, cycling, walking, skating, scooting, any other form of transportation really? It’s bizarre how such a small island cares so much about cars: with our geography raising parking charges should almost don’t matter at all to be fair. We should be untouchable. Need to vote for more bus lanes, cycling tracks, pavements, double-yellows, train extensions.

Even on the mainland they don’t charge people 24/7 parking charges
This Council is a joke.

And they wonder why the High Street is dying, more & more people are buying goods ‘Online’ to avoid rip off parking fees, goods delivered direct to your door, quite often at a reduced price without all the aggrevation and costs involved going to town.

How long can this corrupt, greedy and sickening council keep going for?? Still I guess it will help fill the brown envelopes for keeping people quiet about other things going on. I bet Phil Jordan and his cronies are counting the cash right now. After all he can park on double yellows anytime, so what’s good enough for him is good enough for me.

I understand about the Council treating motorists as cash-cows, and I think it’s wrong of them, but how many of us actually pay to park in car parks?

Tourists, generally yes they have to, but surely all Islanders know where they can park for free in and around town centres and near the beaches?

I honestly can’t remember EVER paying to park on the Island, and we’re talking about a couple of decades. When I go to the mainland I usually pay to park because I don’t know the area, but why would you pay here?

Yes, sometimes you have to walk a little way, but that’s not so bad. And, if you have mobility issues, then you’ll no doubt have a blue badge and can park almost anywhere.

Remember the council no longer have to offer any actual services because of the need to divert all efforts and expenditure into the non-jobbery of tackling ‘climate change’ and if you islanders still persist in owning a private vehicle, then you deserve to be milked for even more cash to fund the unearned pay and colossal pensions of public sector bureaucrats whilst they sneer at you into the bargain for not being good peasant drones

They wouldn’t be so cash strapped if they stopped blowing so much of our money on crap projects like the floating bridge and so many free handouts to the free loaders and waste of space councilors who are not fit for purpose

IOW council are doing a great job, i walk into town to avoid paying stupid prices for parking or having to move the car all the time. And when i get into town there are hardly any shops to go into, with nothing worth buying.
I am saving a fortune.

Cowes High St is great for a relaxed evening walk (Smoking Lobster dinner, Compass drinks and esplanade after <3) due to its pedestrianised zone and a council-run parking that’s almost always full during the day.

Cash strapped you’re having a laugh. Is this the same council that’s giving Southern Vectis £4.5 million subsidy

Yes, crack on, finish killing the towns and businesses.
They are no longer a place to look around anyway.
All the towns are mostly retail rubbish and DIRTY, tourist tat and cheap clothes shops.
The Council have trashed this Island.

IDK, Cowes High St is amazing: Smoking Lobster, Compass, spa, shop with beers, with wines, ComicCoffee, Wight Stuff clothes are nice, and Rapanui is great, and it’s mostly pedestrianised – so I wouldn’t correlate lack of parking spaces with any declines to be honest.

We are all cash strapped thanks to the Russians. The council could have saved thousands putting a normal pipe fence down Alpine road instead of the ridiculously fancy one they have put there which is fat too tall anyhow.

Are you having a laugh? They’ve put up the council tax, lay off people who sit on their backsides doing nothing that will save money??
All you people moan about the free loaders/ spongers/ benefit fraudsters/ bet you wouldn’t say that to their faces or tell DWP on them, so stop complaining!!!

surely if the council want to see businesses succeed in the towns, then why increase the parking charges, surely the more there is an increase the less people will pay to park, if the parking was cheaper there would be more footfall.,

charge less get more simple math’s really

Thank God for Amazon!
# I don’t have to drive to town – fuel saving
# I don’t get fleeced at Council car parks
# I don’t have to deal with dumb shop assistants
# Amazon ALWAYS has the item I want in stock
# I don’t have to suffer from ASB and litter

Little wonder the island towns are withering and in an advanced state of decay.
