UPDATED: Fire crews, paramedics and Police are attending a road traffic collision in St Helens tonight (Monday), in which a car has crashed head on into a wooden pole.
The incident, which Emergency services were alerted to at around 20:00, has taken place on Station Road close to the junction with Downsview Road.
Firefighters from Ryde and Sandown are on scene and are working to stabilise the vehicle and potentially extricate the occupant.
The road has been closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 20:53 – 1 male is being rushed to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport under Police escort following a rapid extrcation from the vehicle.
2 fire engines, 2 ambulances, an ambulance officer and multiple Police units are on scene.
The road is expected to remain closed for sometime. Traffic should divert locally via Latimer Road, or via Brading and Yaverland to Bembridge.
UPDATE @ 21:16 – Police are conducting initial investigations at the scene to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash. Witness statements are being taken from those living nearby.
Although ambulance resources have now stood down, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service remain in attendance.
The vehicle has crashed into a electricity pole, not a telegraph pole as first reported. As a result, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks have been called to make the structure safe.
The jolting of the pole has dislodged cables connecting to a semi-detached house.
UPDATE @ 21:24 – Station Road has been placed under a hard road closure by Island Roads at the request of Police.
Southern Vectis Route 8 buses are not serving stops between Station Road, St Helens and Crossways, Bembridge until further notice. Buses will instead divert via Carpenters Road in both directions.
SSEN engineers have arrived at St Helens and are beginning their work to make safe.
Station Road is expected to remain closed for the rest of the night.
UPDATE TUESDAY – Despite the best efforts of all involved, the man was pronounced dead upon arrival at St Mary’s Hospital.
