A major road in the East Wight has been closed as a result of a car careering off the road and into a boggy section of marshland in Sandown this evening (Saturday).
Police, fire and ambulance crews are currently on the scene on Morton Road having been alerted to the crash at just before 20:10.
It’s known that a car – which was travelling towards Sandown – has left the carriageway and come to rest in around 2ft of water down an embankment.
Firefighters are using ladders to reach the vehicle and Police have deployed a drone to search the local area, as the occupant or occupants of the vehicle cannot be located.
Morton Common has been closed to traffic in both directions while crews deal with the incident.
UPDATE @ 21:01 – Satisfied that no persons are injured, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has stood down from the incident. An ambulance crew, enhanced paramedic and an operational commander were all mobilised to the scene.
Police remain at Morton Common alongside 1 fire appliance from Shanklin.
Recovery has arrived on scene to pull the vehicle clear of the bog.
Island Echo is told that the occupants of the car were seen to run away from the wreckage – although 3 individuals have now returned to the scene.
UPDATE @ 21:30 – The road is to remain closed between Yarbridge and Perowne Way for a while longer due to complexities with the recovery of the car – a N reg Saab.
A hi-ab has been called upon to lift the car from the stagnant water.
UPDATE @ 23:30 – Morton Common has now reopened.

How many more? Why? How? This is getting so upsetting now! Daily reports of crashes. Never known it like this. What is going SO wrong with driving here? 🙁
Phones, Drink, Drugs, Occasionally bad driving, very rarely a Medical Incident, even rarer Mechanical Failure, take your pick. But that’s the order I’d put them in
The island roads are narrow and have poor surfaces, there’s way more cars than the infrastructure was built for and many of the country roads (which are some of the narrowest, and most dangerous) are national speed limit or 50 because they aren’t near residences.
Ive never known anything like it its totally out ot control. Poor island is not loved anymore
The weather doesn’t help , why do people always assume the worst when accidents happen. I’m sure the families don’t need these comments.
This car was behind me all the way from beapers Shute a month or two ago. And he was so irratic. Driving so close I couldn’t see his bonnet. Veering all over the road, drinking at the wheel. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he was on party powder. I am surprised it hasn’t been arrested for drink or drug driving.
It’s the booze that causes accidents – the “party powder” would actually keep you awake and alert lol
Many of these ‘party powders’ play havoc with ones concept of time. Scarcely what one needs when driving.
Total lack of thought for the conditions, tyre’s do not grip so well when its cold and wet.
I scratch my head daily wondering what on earths going on in today’s society. From my observation sat high up in my truck, to many people are fiddling with their mobile phones?!
Where are our new police officers, we had a tax rise to pay for more police, Didn’t we?! How about doing some traffic work. Or command, letting police do the job they are paid to do.
If now needs the IOW Council to step up and reduce the speed limit on the Island to 40 mph. There are so many roads that are 50 mph and in such stupid places, coming up to a bend and near to a roundabout, which makes no sense at all.
People will drive as fast as the speed limit because they can.
How many more incidents will we see with so many sad unnecessary deaths.
Reducing speed limits will make no difference to the idiots on the roads. A lot of ‘drivers’ blatantly ignore the existing speed limits as it is. Hidden speed cameras may go some way to solving this issue as people might actually be more careful through fear of being caught. Wreckless driving, use of mobile phones at the wheel, etc, should attract lengthy driving bans. Trouble is, there is no deterrent to stop people’s dreadful driving standards.
We should have a five year ban for anyone court dangerous driving…..no ifs or buts…
Driving test is far too easy… its a joke..
Tyres are perfectly capable of handling the roads over here when was the last time you checked you its now a fine and 3 points on your licence each tyre that is ha ha ha
Actually, if you want to see the state of “other people’s” tyres, have a quick gander when you next park in a car park. Most enlightening!!
