A controlled explosion has been carried out by Bomb Disposal experts in Shanklin this afternoon (Sunday) following the discovery of a 2-inch mortar.
The explosive find was made earlier this morning, shortly after high tide. This led to Police and HM Coastguard being called to the scene on the revetment between Shanklin and Sandown, near to The Salix cafe.
The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth arrived at the seaside location shortly after 13:00 and confirmed the object – located at the high water mark – to be a 2-inch mortar.
With the device posing a risk to the public, a 200m cordon was established in the area of Small Hope Beach to allow a detonation to take place.
With confirmation of a successful controlled explosion, emergency services stood down from the incident at 13:40.
