A small boat has been smashed to pieces by the power of the sea in one of the hardest-to-reach areas of the Isle of Wight.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were mobilised at 11:36 this morning (Thursday) following reports received by Solent Coastguard that a vessel was on the rocks at Norris Castle, East Cowes – the most northerly point of the Island.
The small sailing vessel had called for assistance on VHF radio stating they had been swamped and were hitting against the rocks, but had managed to get ashore in an area of landslip and woods.
After a short search in what has been described as a ‘very challenging environment’, the casualty was found and supported to recover personal belongings to an area of safety.
The vessel broke up but was eventually drained of water and moved above the high water mark.
Having completed their tasking at East Cowes, Ventnor CRT was tasked to Benbridge following reports of a small vessel dragging its anchor and in an area of danger.
Once on scene, Coastguard Rescue Officers confirmed all was safe and well and no further assistance was required.
This was the 1st and 2nd shouts for the Ventnor team today, with another 2 by early evening.

What were they doing out in dangerous sea conditions I wonder? They are lucky to be still alive. Praise to our emergency guys.
It would not be so hard to access if the Act of Government for provision of a coastal path was actually enforced instead of certain land owners being ‘allowed’ to prevent it.
It’s a race to the finish who’s going to get the most this week, boats aground or car’s on roofs.
“Norris Castle, East Cowes – the most northerly point of the Island”, Is it? what about Egypt Point?
