CRASHES CLOSES SHANKLIN ROAD – BLACK ICE REPORTED ACROSS THE ISLAND

A number of areas across the Island are affected by black ice this morning (Saturday) following a cold snap overnight. 

Wilton Park Road in Shanklin has been closed by Police following 3 crashes which saw a number of vehicles slide on black ice.

As a result, Southern Vectis are diverting buses via Arthurs Hill until further notice.

Island Echo has also received reports from other areas around the Island including rural spots such as Sandown Road near Culver Down Road.

Motorists are advised to take extra care on the roads this morning.

Island Roads are understood to have been out overnight and treated the Island’s roads with grit.

In last night’s forecast by Island weather forecasters, IW Met Service said:

“It [was/last night] set to be another cold night with a widespread frost, although it won’t be quite as cold as previous nights. There will also be freezing fog and mist patches in some places too which may well be quite dense.

”Temperatures: -1’c to -3’c, though falling as low as -5’c in some sheltered rural areas but staying closer to 1’c for windward coasts.
Winds: Light NNW becoming NW

“Tomorrow [Today/Saturday]: Some places will start with dense freezing fog patches, though outside these it will be bright and sunny. Later in the day becomes rather complex due to showers developing in the channel with the risk of some of these reaching southern areas of the island towards the Evening, which could be wintry. Other parts of the island may see some of these showers but the risk is lower. Where showers could fall on to frozen surfaces it will lead to the formation of ice.

“Again as mentioned in the previous update there is still quite a lot of uncertainty on how far North these showers will get due to some of models keeping the showers offshore, but there will be more updates to come.

“Temperatures: 3’c to 5’c but reaching as high as 6’c for windward coasts. Winds: Light NW becoming variable”.
