Hartford Care’s The Elms Nursing Home in Bembridge has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its latest inspection.
The Elms has been rated ‘Good’ across each of the 5 key criteria used to assess adult social care services: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.
The CQC report, following assessment in January 2023, found that people were happy living at The Elms and spoke positively about the care they receive. Staffing levels were observed to be appropriate to meet the needs of the residents and staff were available and responsive to requests, with a good understanding of the needs of the residents. The home was deemed to provide a homely, welcoming and happy environment, and commitment shown by the management team to provide person-centred, safe and effective care.
The Elms offers residential, daycare, nursing, dementia, end-of-life care and respite care at its characterful 48-bedroom home. Residents benefit from specialist nursing care, large, landscaped gardens and enjoy a full schedule of activities, entertainment and outings to suit all tastes.
In September the care home also celebrated the achievements of its staff, with Michelle Archibald promoted to Registered Manager (from Deputy Manager) and Aleksandra Kraus promoted to Deputy Manager.

I would like to say ‘well done’ to The Elms, but..
According to tge CQC website there are 97 businesses/establishments on the IoW and only 4 have been rated ‘Outstanding’.
Whilst not meaning to demean The Elms’ achievement, it is something of a concern that most on the Island are rated ‘Good’ as opposed to the the next and top tier of ‘Outstanding’, or, are we now in this country just happy with ‘good enough’?
I’m with you on that. Good is not good enough. When you are paying for a service you want the best. So now the management can relax till next year.
Hang on ,good should read very good. This place is amazing. My 90 year old mum spent time in there and they treated her as one of their family. She was a challenge, bless her, Dementia, Diabetes, Doubly incontinent and sight problems, and they didn’t blink an eye.. So yes that’s what i would call outstanding . So well done The Elms and its Caring staff
Tell ya what….go into the care service and see how “easy” it is to get good according to cqc. There’s always someone somewhere that has to knock others

I’ve just had a stay at The Elms in Bembridge for two weeks after a two week stay in St Mary’s from a case of Sepsis. Every single member of staff that work there day or night are fantastic. Their so caring, genuine and lovely people I can’t fault anyone of them. The meals are very wide ranging and incredibly tasty. The physiotherapy that I received after such a long time in bed in hospital had to work hard to get me back-up on my feet and walking again after Muscular Atrophy and muscle wastage in hospital. Within four day’s their own Physiotherapy team had me up and walking about. As far as I’m concerned it’s definitely an “Excellent Service” that I received. Thanks to all the staff at The Elms.

I’m afraid to tell you this Billy….physio staff don’t remain in care homes 24 hours a day. They probably see clients for 30 mins a session a day. Who do you think carries on the set tasks and helps to regain the confidence and muscle strength…hint: it’s the staff at the care home who are there 24 hours a day.
