Island residents and businesses are being asked one important question this Business Continuity and Resilience Awareness Week — are you emergency-ready? The Isle of Wight Council is supporting the annual campaign that aims to provide people with ideas on how they can prepare for potential incidents and to raise awareness of being ready for emergencies. Record-setting rainfall and extreme weather across the Island last autumn/winter have underscored the need for emergency preparedness — and one of the key themes this year is community resilience. Disasters and emergencies such as last October’s devastating floods and the catastrophic landslide at Bonchurch, one of the largest landslides recorded on the South Coast of England, can strike without warning, anywhere and anytime.+ Being prepared helps protect yourself, the people you love and the things you value most in the event of an emergency. By taking a proactive approach, you can equip yourself with the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to tackle unexpected challenges head-on — and help reduce their impact when they do happen. Simple things can help to make you more resilient, such as packing a ‘grab-and-go bag’ — a rucksack filled with essential supplies that’s easy to grab in case you need to evacuate your home or workplace on short notice — and writing a household emergency plan. A checklist of suggested ‘grab bag’ items and a useful template for residents to draft their own emergency home plan can be found on a new council web page launched today (Monday) in support of Business Continuity Awareness Week. The ‘Are you emergency ready’ web page lists five steps to prepare for an emergency. It includes information on how to sign up for emergency alerts from the Met Office and the Environment Agency, and how you can check the long-term flood risk of your own property, alongside detailed flood maps and general flooding preparation and advice. Councillor Karen Lucioni, Cabinet member for community protection, said:
“We tend not to think about emergencies until they occur. When an emergency strikes, its impact can be severe, both for individuals, businesses and the services that support them. “Emergencies can also have a devastating impact on mental health, with the stress of dealing with major incidents. However, with a practical and proactive approach, and by planning ahead, you can make yourself more resilient to emergencies that might affect your community and your home. “This will help mitigate the worst effects of an emergency while helping you and your community to recover much more quickly.”

Grow up, just bored people imagining some none existent calamity to ‘justify’ yet another waste of money group.
Retired too young and now like bored boys, trying to find something meaningful in life hoping for some disaster to justify their existence
you are missing the point kevin,
these council groups all cost money to create, operate and administrate – this type of thing is solely in place to spend council money, otherwise at the next budget determination, they cut the money to the island, as it didn’t spend it last time around.
if the councillors couldn’t claim for meeting expenses, then they wouldn’t attend this sort of thing at all, ever.
War is very likely, the world is not a safe place now….its not the weather we need too worry about, its unrest and eventually nuclear war….Its coming sooner than you think…
Bug out bags are a bit of a thing in the USA, but they tend to have firearms and other extremes. You can make a basic one quite cheaply. There’s sites on the internet that can give you a list of suggestions. You just need to adjust it to your environment. And it’s always handy for when you forget something essential on the shopping list, because there’ll be some grub in there.
Must have been a slow news day!
The Island has just faced a year of the worst flooding in memory. The world faced several years of lock downs and resulting global logistics struggle. The Russian/Ukrainian conflict threatens energy security to Europe with actions like the Nord Stream 2 being sabotaged. A new Middle Eastern conflict that embroils the West has kicked off, again affecting energy security. The Suez Canal was effectively closed by Evergreen. China is threatening the invasion of Taiwan which will kick off a genuine WW3 and cause another shortage of products availabile as their production and exportation power will be used to punish the West.
So perhaps it is worth maintaining a level of preparedness.
Strange…
There used to be an organisation calked ‘Civil Defence’ – long since dismantled and consigned to the dust in of history by successive Governments (Left and Right).
Their task was to ensure that stockpiles of relevant supplies (foodstuffs, water, fuel, even emergency kitchens) could be established/supplied to the populace at large…
All gone now…
And, I can tell you one thing without fear of contradiction – Isle if Wight especially, no-one in ‘Authority’ has the slightest inkling if an idea what to do in a REAL emergency. The art of ‘it’s someone else’s task/problem’ is so ingrained institutionally that, to quote Private Fraser from Dads Army ‘we’re all doomed’!
In other words: “buy yet more insurance”.
Oh for fuck sake another left wing climate change scare monger. I wonder how they are brave enough to get out of bed in the morning, because who knows the risks out there
What’s left wing got to do with it?
What a load of scaremongering nonsense.
I guess it must be keeping some people in a job….
Well goodness me.. I certainly don’t have any where near the amount shown in the picture ! .. but..quite frankly… I have to many other things to worry about.. ( bumbles back into the shed )..
What if another Plandemic takes place.
Just remember …make sure your jabbed before disaster hits
Do I detect a little sarcasm/irony?
That’s all well and good, but there is nothing there to help deal with a zombie attack. A machete should have been included really.
When someone pushes the nuclear button, doesn’t matter who is in government or what you have stashed in your little rucksack as it will make no difference at all. Pointless.
