Although retail outlets across the Island can re-open from today (Wednesday), Claire’s on Newport High Street won’t be as it has been announced the shop is now permanently closed.
Claire’s has been providing jewellery and accessories for young women, teens, tweens and kids on the Isle of Wight for over 11 years.
Customers are being thanked for their support over the years, with Claire’s having been a part of Newport town for over 11 years.
It’s not entirely clear why the store has closed but a sign erected in the store window says:
“We’re sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances, we will not be re-opening this branch.
“We’d like to thank all our amazing customers throughout the years for your support – we’ve loved serving you”
“We’ll miss you! Take care and stay safe”.
Today’s news is another blow for the High Street, added to the 40-odd empty stores already in the town.

But Amazon, Apple and the likes continue to grow, soon to be ready to merge with the government.
well thank idiot gov for all the closures as closing them was v uness.high rates rent wouldnt of helped either.greedy twats im disabled and have too shop online as do many.tbh yes amazon are cleaning up but prices are too high in local shops and lockdowns caused it all
~As the worlds poor fill the UK, and then go on to have huge families then more and more houses will be built on our green fields, and our high streets will become flats with masses of unemployed, and having more children the only means of income for most.
Thus what they thought they had escaped from they bring with them for all of us to then endure.
The high street needs to be supported to these changes that have accelerated changes to shopping habits by ten years or so. More flexibility in use classes on the high street is needed: investment, quality developments in suitable buildings which make remaining retail units a viable size. People need to work together to really think about this place and how it could work. There’s plenty of reasons people could enjoy Newport and if it’s not just about buying things anymore, let’s thing of and support other purposes like improved social spaces and a place to just be and let’s support the local businesses that are left of the clone chains can’t make it any more.
The High Streets worldwide will not survive unless the major online retailers are taxed differently. They need taxing as a percentage of turnover in the relevant country. Otherwise they structure their accounts to avoid the tax that our high street retailers have to pay, by clever corporate structures.
The government need to address this before it is too late .
Does anyone know what’s happening with the peacocks stores in Ryde and Newport?
