Aldi is looking to recruit over 500 new apprentices across the UK in 2024, including here on the Isle of Wight. Applications are now open for the supermarket’s apprenticeship scheme, with opportunities across stores, buying, logistics and HGV driver roles. The country’s 4th-largest supermarket recently announced new rates of pay for all store and warehouse colleagues, with pay for some apprenticeship roles rising by up to 37%. At Aldi, a Store Apprentice can earn £8.44 per hour in year 1, rising to £11.83 per hour in year 3, with paid breaks. Meanwhile, those in logistics and driver roles can earn £10.96 and £14.13 per hour respectively. Successful applicants will have the chance to achieve industry-recognised qualifications while they earn and will also be eligible for several additional benefits, including a range of shopping discounts, a bike-to-work scheme and a new mortgage advice option where colleagues can seek free mortgage advice and access mortgage education. The apprenticeship push forms part of Aldi’s nationwide expansion drive, with the supermarket creating 6,000 new roles across the UK in total last year. Lisa Murphy, Training and Development Director at Aldi UK, said:
“We’re on the lookout for hardworking and driven individuals to bolster our Aldi team. “By joining our apprenticeship scheme, individuals will become experts in their role and receive in-depth skills training at one of the fastest-growing retailers in the country. “The apprentices of today are the leaders of tomorrow, so we’re always on the hunt for more amazing individuals from all backgrounds to join our team.”

Ah, yes, a 4 year apprenticeship in shelf filling….
Agreed. And if they do well in that, maybe a spell on the checkout. Its cheap labour. Kids of today need proper apprenticeships in skilled trades. Supermarkets have devalued apprenticeships.
And cheap labour to go with it
I can assure you that a job shelf filling is the height of ambition for most islanders. Some come from a long line of shelf fillers.
All those with kids might apply as they only need endure 16 hr per week, and STILL get all their rent and council tax paid, still get full universal credits of hundreds a week as well as their wage, and will still get free prescriptions dental care for all the family, still get extra help with food and energy costs, school uniforms and school transportation.
And will still whinge they are ‘in poverty’ to gain ever more free handouts despite having a greater income than most working people but far, far less outgoing costs, and those they have are all paid for by handouts, so more time off as only working 16 hours to enjoy their life and OUR money.
See these people as we used to do dole scroungers for they take FAR more out
Keep up with the changes Karen
Aldi should be banned from using the word “apprenticeships”. They are devaluing the word. They are simple advertising for unskilled workers on a minimum wage.
Moronic comments as usual.
Seems most posters didn’t even read the article before posting their response.
Since when did a career in Buying, Logistics or HGV driving have anything to do with stacking shelves?
Maybe you missed the reference to “Store Apprentice” roles. Do you really think there will be opportunities in buying and logistics on the island? No, I thought not.
