The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed at a road traffic collision on Briddlesford Road near Havenstreet tonight (Thursday).
A single vehicle has left the road and come to rest upside down in a field having careered through a hedge.
The air ambulance has landed in the field beside the carriageway as doctors tend to the casualty.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a single crew and an operational commander in attendance. The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are also on scene with 1 appliance from Newport.
No other vehicles are thought to be involved in the incident, which occurred at around 22:00.
The road has been closed by Police in both directions between Lynn Cross and Downend roundabout.
UPDATE @ 23:30 – The male casualty has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital for further assessment.
The road is to remain closed for the time being whilst investigations are carried out and a condition update is received from mainland doctors.
UPDATE @ 00:30 – Briddlesford Road has now reopened to traffic to both directions.
The vehicle remains in situ in the local farmers’ field. Recovery of the car will be arranged in due course.
UPDATE FRIDAY – It has been confirmed that a 19-year-old man has been taken to Southampton General Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
His Citroen C3 remains in the field this morning but is causing no obstruction to the highway.

Straight bit of road… makes you wonder ‘how’…
Seems almost all accidents on the island are caused by piss poor driving, and still the police do nothing.
Dont me, young male driver need say I more.
We can all take a guess at ‘what and why’ but it would be in the interests of Road Safety for the reasons for these accidents, when established, to be published. Especially the single vehicle ones.
If it’s the section of road I think it is, the camber of the road throws you all over the place if you’re doing above 40… Maybe inexperience of that road and braking in panic may be the cause…
