Plans for 11 affordable houses in Calbourne have temporarily been put on hold.
At the Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee meeting on Tuesday, members decided to defer the plans for 12 houses on Elm Lane — 11 of which would be affordable — so the developer, Vectis Housing, could provide more information.
Officers advised councillors the application could not legally be passed, as information about the development’s nitrate neutrality had not been submitted so the correct regulations could not be completed. They also raised other issues including highway access problems, pedestrian safety and the increased use of the Elm Lane and Sun Hill junction, saying it would result in an unsafe environment for future residents.
Officers had recommended the application be refused but councillors felt it was a very sustainable development that would provide much-needed affordable properties on the Island.
Councillors felt if the main issue of nitrate neutrality was addressed they had a view to accepting the application when it came back before the authority. However, Councillor Chris Jarman proposed they reject the application as he felt it would not address the other problems officers had with the application and it would be disingenuous of the committee to return the proposals under the illusion they could be resolved.
He proposed a motion to reject but received no seconder so the motion fell.
Councillor Geoff Brodie said the arguments which had been put against the application were excessive in the extreme. He said many of the issues, other than the nitrate neutrality one, could be dealt with by planning conditions.
Councillor Debbie Andre said she accepted the nitrates were an issue but felt Vectis Housing seemed to have gone above and beyond to do everything they could to provide affordable housing for residents and councillors should do everything they can to support it.
A motion to defer the application was proposed, with the majority of councillors supporting the motion except Councillor Claire Critchison, who abstained.

Oh no, Brodies involved again. He would approve house building on any areas of green land, Tenison down maybe, Hes an enemy of our island. Affordable housing is often mentioned, SO, how much is an affordable house? Nobody will say. Of course, people need some where to live. Why don’t the council hire professional people to build council houses to rent, instead of buying up commercial property all over the country? Then charge affordable rents, or shared ownership. Why not build park home style properties.? Some are realy nice. People don’t need a big house to start with. Oh, and build them in small numbers, not shanty towns Council for God’s sake use some imagination.
Affordable housing should only be available in run down areas such.
If you can’t afford market prices then you don’t belong in that area
And in many cases you perhaps ought to rent as if struggling to buy now then YOU become a liability to others when you default on debts as interest rates rise
Unbelievable truly unbelievable !
Is that another green bit of land, going to concrete??
More false flag affordable greenfield development will be along soon.
How many Councillors live in Calbourne apart from the old money brigade who seem to think they are still noteworthy over here? Affordable houses, are needed!!! It doesn’t matter what view you think your birthright entitles you to, legally the views out of your window are not your right! The list is excessive was a polite way of saying nonsense and nimbys!
Councillors felt it was a very sustainable development
on a greenfield and no supporting infrastructure increases such as hospital beds, dentists etc to prove that the council aren’t allowing the islands population to continue to swamp the infrastructure
councillor brodie as usual, is supporting the destruction of more greenfields to accommodate more people from the mainland
Why do young people think they deserve affordable homes? I provided for my wife and child with a job when I was young! If you can’t, you don’t deserve a home
So many people these days and they’re not all youngsters, think they have to get handouts for everything. You’re quite right, if you can’t afford to feed, clothe and bring up your own kids in a secure and healthy home, then don’t have them. Wait until you can afford to provide for the poor kids.
Funny that one wage was sufficient for you to support a family when you were working… one average wage barely supports a single person these days. Meanwhile these young people you are so quick to target with abuse are now supporting a rapidly ageing population. Fact of the matter is that young people now will suffer more than the previous generation in order to have the same or a lesser standard of living.
There used to be council housing which was an affordable way for working people to live and to raise a family. Of course now that stock was sold off by the government at cut rate prices and now many of the same houses have been sold for 10 times their initial purchase price. Tell me again how young working people don’t deserve a home?
Well said.
Let’s hope you’re wife or child don’t fall on hard times obviously they will not deserve a home…or you.
Affordable houses would be nice if they went to islanders rather than than the usual types who’ve probably come from hundreds of miles away, I’m sure the residents of Calbourne wouldn’t appreciate their village be populated with the usual types who live in these ‘affordable’ houses. Funnily enough I probably don’t have enough money to buy a house in Calbourne, doubt I’d be allowed to buy one of these though. So if you’re a normal person you can’t afford to buy a house there but if you’re a freeloader you can get a cheap house in a nice village, doesn’t seem very fair to me. Here’s a thought, if you can’t afford to buy in somewhere like calbourne maybe look elsewhere, Another really strange location to build affordable housing.
The concrete jungle jigsaw is getting bigger , …..
Of course Brodie wants it …..
He obviously doesn’t like Greenfield, wildlife or carbon neutral trees……
Let’s think climate change?????
How about taking all the rundown hotels and turn them into affordable rented accommodation for islanders..?????…
Leave Greenfield alone flora and fauna were here well before concrete!!!!!!
So even though many safety concerns have been raised and identified, Councillors still want to go ahead and allow this development to be built. Just about sums up the incompetent attitudes in County Hall doesn’t it.
Obviously all the brown noses marking me down !!!!
If you want to live in a concrete jungle ????
Move ……perhaps that would be better for those that prefer green space tree’s nature’s flora and fauna …..
The iow has always been k own for it’s outstanding beauty…..
Now it is known for the concrete jungle the 1 hospital the lack of dentists and rubbish council ….
So if you support this mark me down …
Broad shoulders no sleep lost here !
So Clr Brodie thinks the issues are excessive and could be dealt with by planning conditions? So the already hazardous junction at the pub, the lack of safe pedestrian access or walkways, the proposed vehicle entrance/exit on a dangerous bend, and the impact on the local overstretched GP surgeries, to name but a few are excessive are they? Live in the local area that’s affected and then make such stupid comments, I don`t think so. Wake up to what this is, a money-making exercise that benefits the few and blites and damages an area of outstanding natural beauty
Do the house rules allow mass Thums down reviews, when a few days ago there were lots of positive’s Thums up? I note one contributor has remained untouched by this, Mmmm
