66mph winds have been hitting The Needles over the past 12 hours, but the sun has finally shone through to reveal a sunny but blustery day across the Isle of Wight.
IW Met Service has recorded gusts of 66mph at The Needles – the most westerly point of the Island – and 59mph at the most southerly point, St Catherine’s Lighthouse.
The Solent has seen wind speeds reach 51mph which has resulted in the suspension of Hovertravel’s service for most of the day. Other cross-Solent operators have managed to keep to timetable for the most part.
Overnight a boat got into difficulty whilst being towed into Ryde Harbour, as reported by Island Echo this morning.
The wind is gradually dying down now with tonight set to be a mixture of clear and cloudy periods but staying dry after any early evening showers have cleared away.
According to forecasters at IW Met Service, tomorrow will see some early brightness but it will turn rather cloudy as the day progressing with only very occasional bright or sunny spells. There is the risk of a light shower here and there but most places will remain dry.
