5 children have been rescued from the sea at Ryde as a result of 2 separate incidents on the popular stretch of beach this afternoon (Friday).
Ryde Beach Lifeguards, HM Coastguard and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have all been involved in rescuing and caring for the youngsters, who got into difficulty in a red flagged area of the beach at around midday.
Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was also launched, but was stood down off Seaview whilst en-route to Ryde.
The children have now all been taken to St Mary’s Hospital by paramedics and by family members over concerns of secondary drowning. It comes as a result of the kids swallowing sea water during their ordeal.
Lifeguards have also been involved in moving on a group of youths who were seen jumping and diving from the Harbour wall into the shallow water.
A spokesperson for Ryde Beach Lifeguards has said:
”We cannot reiterate enough that nobody should swim in Ryde Harbour, nor should they swim by the harbour rocks. It is Red Flagged because there is a strong current that will pull swimmers out to sea and towards the pier”.

Firstly, I’m glad they are ok.
But, the warnings are there, and what ever happend to parental responsibility?
Errors of judgement happen to us all, and luckily, they are ok, but what if they wernt rescued? Or lucky enough to have been spotted in the first place?
You dont mess with the sea, however tough you think you are, period.
I can tell you exactly what happened to the young man and the girl off Ryde on Friday.
I happened to be entering Ryde Marina in my motor launch when my wife and I were alerted by people standing on the harbour wall. They may have included Lifeguards and Coastguards : I am not sure. They pointed back out to the entrance channel where we then saw two people in the water. One, who we later found to be a girl was swimming strongly and did not appear to be in difficulty. She was calling and drawing our attention to a young man who was clearly in distress. We were able to pull him into our boat, in my view, just in time. The young lady climbed onboard and we took them both into Ryde Marina and the care of the Bembridge Coastguards and the Ryde Beach Lifeguards.
We were very fortunate to have been in a position to help and hope that both youngsters have fully recovered from what must have been a very frightening experience.
I would like to suggest that the lifeguard’s red flag on the East end of the harbour wall was not very conspicuous and I am not surprised that some swimmers were caught in the strong currents that flow close to the bleach at this point.
Very fortunate for them you were there.
parents anyone? how?
Where are the parents? Boozed up probably
Boozed up???? Unless you know the story I suggest you shut your mouth! One girl swam out to help her male friend and saved his life ! Which was praised by the coast guard team! She didn’t have to go to hospital but they were helped from the water and bought back to safety!
I’ve always thought of a child being below the age of a teenager, however it’s confusing, because we often class a child up to the age of eighteen years old…
My point is, were these “Children” actually Children? If the answer is yes, where were their parents….
I see the usual suspects are all over this with their ludicrous diatribes, but are studious ignoring the article about a 60 year old woman assaulting a 3 year old.
Thank you so much for that comment, we are in a world where people have no clue what is going on and who was there etc. All sit behind their keyboards, suggesting the worse and writing made up story’s. Thank you again Cal
Unfortunately this site is infested with nasty old gits and blue rinsers who hate anyone under 40. I see some of them actually have started posting their obnoxious bile on the other articles excusing an assault on a 3 year old as just chastisement.
Utter filth, the lot of them.
You too will be an old git, the older you get the quicker time goes….you call people over the age of 40 “Filthy” the lot of them, I’m guessing you’re own parents are of the age of filth also….your very nieve and immature thinking along these lines…
You have a lot too learn…
Well said young man, far to many old gits on this site.
“what ever happened to parental responsibility”
Wow, surprised that there were so many parents of the year resident on the island all with the most perfect children ever.
Back in reality, I understand that the situation can change quickly and that also as soon as your back is turned children can get themselves into all sort sorts of trouble.
massive thumbs up to the unsung heroes u guys are brilliant!!!! 24/7 no stop saving life’s thank you
If you ask any teacher.Whats the best thing about teaching.
It’s the eleven weeks off a year.
As a retired teacher, roll on September when miserable old gits like me get the island back and it’s our playground again.
Bloody kids.Ha ha.
What is even the point Mrs T?
Take your unwanted, nasty dribble to whatever corner of the island your from and keep your comments to yourself.
I’ll tell you, there’s too many people like you, sinical, rude, idiotic and plain old wrong!
Instead using your worthless time writing needless nasty, and uneducated comments how about praising a child that wanted to help another friend, the kindness of strangers and the work of the coastguard. Better yet maybe spend your time advocating water safety for children to make sure this happens less?
Regards from a family member of one of the children (hard working, NON-Benifit, kind loving family)
You twad!!
MrsT makes some very valid points IMO.
Only if the cap fits would anyone feel affronted by such, for we all know people just as she describes.
I feel your comment about JUST praising the children is all part of the problem of society now.
No one is ever to ‘blame’, no one can bare to be told the truth, or have their mistakes, idiocy and flaws ever pointed out.
All society does is praise losers for their effort no matter how minimal, and now only highlight others faults if they can make money by suing that person.
Parents should be accountable not society for their children whilst in dangerous places like the beaches.
disgusting statement.those young people could have drowned. love to all the families and youngsters involved .thanks toall our hard working rescue and emergency mcrews.
